 — Trent Thornton was looking forwa

HOUSTON (AP) rd to Sunday’s game against the Astros since he was traded to Toronto in the offseason. He delivered arguably his best start of the season.Thornton shut down his former team into the seventh inning David Freese Jersey , Teoscar Hernández hit two of Toronto’s season-high five home runs and the Blue Jays hammered the Houston Astros 12-0.Article continues below ...“I knew I was going to be pretty amped up for this game, but I just kind of wanted to slow things down and execute each pitch,” Thornton said. “For the most part, I was able to do that. And the bats just exploded, so it was a great team win.”Thornton (2-5) scattered six singles, struck out seven and walked three in 6 2/3 innings. He has given up no more than three runs in six of his last seven starts.“He just keeps getting better the more he pitches,” Toronto manager Charlie Montoya said. “For a rookie to be that good, he’s already got the record for strikeouts for a rookie for the Blue Jays. That’s impressive. He’s done a good job. He’s getting better every time he takes the mound.”Thornton was drafted by the Astros in 2015. The 25-year-old righty was dealt to Toronto for Aledmys Diaz.“I wanted to see when we were going to play against Houston because I played with a lot of those guys, came up in the system with a lot of those guys and close with a lot of those guys,” Thornton said. “It was just going to be a fun game to pitch with a little chip on my shoulder.”Freddy Galvis and Hernández each hit three-run homers in a seven-run sixth inning. Hernández added a solo drive in the ninth off Tyler White, who started the game at first base.Lourdes Gurriel Jr. launched a long, 452-foot two-run homer and had an RBI single and sacrifice fly. Rowdy Tellez also homered. The 12 runs matched a season high set Thursday at the Orioles.“It was a good road trip for us,” Montoya said. “Swinging the bats of course, we faced a couple of tough pitchers for Houston but other than that, 3-2 road trip, we swing the bats better. It was great to see.”Brad Peacock (6-4) went five innings and allowed four runs for the second straight start.“He had a tough time getting into the game and then the one slider to Gurriel that ended his outing,” Houston manager AJ Hinch said. “All in all , I think he was doing fine to control the game with what he could. A couple homers and a couple mistakes — not a horrible game for him — but not a day that feels good for anybody.Peacock said he was struggling to locate the four-seam fastball.“It wasn’t very good,” Peacock said of his outing. “There was one pitch I’d like to have back to Gurriel. Out of the hand, I kind of knew something bad was going to happen. It didn’t feel good. I’m in a little funk right now, but I’ll find a way to get out of it.”WHITE PITCHESWhite, regularly a first baseman and designated hitter, got a nice ovation when he took the mound for the ninth inning. White, who had pitched in two other games this season, allowed one run on two hits. This was his fifth career pitching appearance in the majors — he’s allowed five runs in 4 2/3 innings overall.TRAINER’S ROOMBlue Jays: 3B Vladimir Guerrero Jr. returned to the lineup as the designated hitter. He finished 1 for 5. Guerrero missed Saturday’s game after getting hit by a pitch on his hand on Friday.Astros: OF George Springer (left hamstring strain) took flyballs in the outfield prior to the game. He is expected to run the bases on Monday in Cincinnati before a possible rehabilitation assignment. “We want him to do every single thing that we can think of to get him ready to play,” Hinch said. “We are going to an extreme for him basically because of how long he’s been out.” .. 2B Jose Altuve (left hamstring strain) will play in rehabilitation games Sunday and Monday with Triple-A Round Rock.UP NEXTBlue Jays: RHP Edwin Jackson (1-4, 10.22 ERA) starts Monday in the opener of a four-game series against the Angels. Jackson earned the win in his last start Wednesday against the Orioles, allowing two runs over five innings.Astros: LHP Wade Miley (6-3, 3.14) starts Monday in the first of a three-game series at the Reds. Miley threw six shutout innings in his last start on June 9 against the Orioles. DENVER (AP) — The blazing fastball of German Márquez elevated him to the big leagues. His investment in a couple of electric breaking pitches just earned him big bucks.Márquez and the Colorado Rockies agreed to a $43 million, five-year contract Saturday. The right-hander’s new contract calls for a $1.5 million signing bonus, payable within 30 days of the deal’s approval by the commissioner’s office, and salaries of $1 million this year, $4.5 million in 2020, $7.5 million in 2021 Manuel Margot Jersey , $11 million in 2022 and $15 million in 2023. Colorado has a $16 million option for 2024 with a $2.5 million buyout.“I want to continue my hard work. Nothing changes,” Márquez said through a translator. “The goal is to always win a championship here. I look forward to this opportunity.”Already armed with a 95-mph fastball, Márquez has steadily developed a mystifying slider and curve. He’s working on a changeup that could take him to an even higher level. Márquez struck out a franchise-best 230 last season, going 14-11 with a 3.77 ERA.“I’m glad he’s part of our team and not a part of another one,” Rockies general manager Jeff Bridich cracked.Márquez was acquired by Colorado on Jan. 28, 2016, along with reliever Jake McGee in a deal with Tampa Bay.Back then, Márquez was another minor league pitcher in the Rays organization with a lively fastball. But Rockies scout Jack Gillis had a gut feeling about him.“It wasn’t any magic stat or any sort of fancy analytic this or that, it was somebody who had seen him pitch for a number of times, and a number of reports,” Bridich explained. “It was a scout willing to … take a strong stance and say, ‘Yeah, I think we should believe in this guy.’“At the time, he had electric stuff. He still had to work on his changeup back then. But it was a loose, clean arm. … It was just a lot of things that you look for in what you would consider a front-line pitching, starter prospect. He checked a lot of boxes.”If Márquez finishes among the top three in Cy Young Award voting at least twice over the next five years, the option becomes a mutual option. His 2023 and 2024 salaries would escalate by $1 million for each prior Cy Young Award and by $500 ,000 for each finish from second through fifth. The Rockies renewed Márquez’s contract for $565,000 this spring, just $10,000 over the major league minimum despite his stellar 2018.A new deal for Márquez has been in the works for a while.“There was enough communication where as time passed, enough information passed between everybody involved. It was the right time to get it done,” Bridich said. The 24-year-old from Venezuela got the start in Game 3 of the NL Division Series against Milwaukee last season. He allowed two runs over five innings.Márquez forms a potent 1-2 combination with lefty Kyle Freeland. They have a friendly rivalry.“The competition between me and Freeland, it’s always been there and great to have,” said Márquez, who won a Silver Slugger Award last season after hitting .300 with one homer. “Not only Kyle, but rest of the staff.”Márquez would have been eligible for salary arbitration next winter and for free agency after the 2022 season.“Every day, at this level especially, we earn what we get,” Bridich said. “The minute we think we’ve got something figured out, is the minute we get humbled — or are about to.“There’s a lot of hard work and a lot of pushing each other and a lot of helping each other along the way. You need people who are willing to commit to that as teammates. It’s been a healthy part of our process over the last number of years. He’s been a big part of it. We expect to see that to continue.”
