OLYMPICSCOLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- The U.S. Olympic Committee and leaders of the effort to bring the 2024 Games to Los Angeles reached terms on a marketing agreement, clearing a major hurdle nearly a year before those Olympics are awarded. The Joint Marketing Program Agreement would shift a majority of the USOCs marketing revenue over to the host city for a period surrounding the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee requires the agreement to eliminate crossover sponsorships -- for instance, the USOC pairing with one carmaker, while a host city pairs with another. The inability to reach an agreement on the marketing deals until the 11th hour played into the failures of both the 2016 Chicago bid and the 2012 New York bid.In some instances, host cities have received up to 90 percent of a national organizing committees sponsorship revenue.COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Tommie Smith and John Carlos, the American sprinters whose raised-fist salutes at the 1968 Olympics are an ageless sign of race-inspired protest, will join the U.S. Olympic team at the White House next week for its meeting with President Barack Obama.Smith and Carlos were sent home from the Olympics after raising their black-gloved fists in a symbolic protest during the U.S. national anthem. They called it a human rights salute.USOC CEO Scott Blackmun asked them to serve as ambassadors as the federation tries to bring more diversity to its own ranks. They will join the team at the White House next Wednesday, then later that evening at an awards celebration in Washington. The sprinters have been referenced frequently in the recent protests, spurred by Colin Kaepernick, during national anthems at NFL games. One player, Marcus Peters of the Chiefs, raised his own black-gloved fist before Kansas Citys season opener.COLLEGE FOOTBALLYPSILANTI, Mich. -- Protesters gathered near an end zone and marched on the field after Eastern Michigans 27-24 victory over Wyoming, three days after racial graffiti was found spray painted on a campus building. The students sat peacefully and talked to EMU President James Smith late in the third quarter. They moved outside the end zone area in the closing moments before walking onto the field chanting, No justice! No peace! A Wyoming player joined them for a few moments. The national anthem was played early while the teams were off the field, with the university citing safety and security concerns. Eastern Michigan walked onto the field linking arms as a show of solidarity. The graffiti was found Tuesday and included the letters KKK and a racial epithet. School officials say another racial slur was found Wednesday in a stairwell. Authorities also are investigating after an SUV pushed through a crowd protesting the graffiti Tuesday.PHILADELPHIA -- Penn State has settled a court fight with its insurer over payments to victims of the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal, a case that revealed new allegations about how early late Penn State football coach Joe Paterno knew of accusations against his assistant coach.A one-page document filed with a Philadelphia court on Thursday stated the action against the Pennsylvania Manufacturers Association Insurance Company was settled.Terms of the deal and the amount of payment are confidential by mutual consent, a Penn State spokeswoman said in an email Friday. As part of the legal tussle over whether the insurer would have to cover Sandusky-related claims, both sides obtained sworn depositions from key witnesses and other documents that hadnt previously become public. The presiding judge, after requests from The Associated Press and other media outlets, released some of that information in July.PRO BASKETBALLMINNEAPOLIS -- Kevin Garnett has decided to retire after 21 seasons in the NBA, leaving a legacy as one of the best defensive players in league history and one of the games most influential and intense competitors.Garnett posted a video on his Instagram account saying farewell and thank you for the journey. He narrates the short, black-and-white video that shows him walking alone through Target Center with sunglasses on.Garnett informed the Timberwolves of his decision to retire. The team will waive the franchise icon, which will allow him to collect his entire $8 million salary for next season. That is the same approach the San Antonio Spurs took with Tim Duncan. The 40-year-old Garnett put the Timberwolves on the map by turning one of the most hapless franchises in professional sports into a perennial playoff team. He later helped return the Boston Celtics to glory.OTHERPROVIDENCE, R.I. -- A judge has approved a settlement with former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling over a $75 million deal with Rhode Island state that brought his failed video game company to the state.A court spokesman says Superior Court Judge Michael Silverstein approved the $2.5 million settlement.Schilling and three other 38 Studios officials agreed to the settlement with Rhode Islands economic development agency earlier this week. It will be paid by the companys insurance.Schilling agreed to move 38 Studios to Rhode Island in 2010 in exchange for a state loan guarantee. His company failed less than two years later. The state has now recovered around $45 million. Just one company remains as a defendant, First Southwest, which acted as the states financial adviser in the deal.Nike Shox Clearance UK .com) - The Chicago Blackhawks aim for their third three-game winning streak of the season when they host the struggling Edmonton Oilers in Sundays battle at the United Center. Nike Air Force 1 Low White . -- The proud fathers huddled near the Dallas Stars dressing room, smiling, laughing and telling stories while wearing replica green sweaters of their sons team. . Manuel was offered a position the day he was fired. He accepted earlier this week and the team made the announcement Friday. Cheap Nike Air Max Classic BW . Aside from the trilogy main event title fight, there are a number of intriguing matchups in the heavyweight, welterweight and lightweight divisions. Nike Shox Nz Mens .ca look back at each of the Top 10 stories of 2013. Today, we look back at Boston Strong - a citys recovery from tragedy.I thought both the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Edmonton Eskimos were much improved in Week 6. First the Ticats - You score 30 points on the road and your offence is improving. It was the highest point total since Week 1 in Toronto when the Ticats scored 34. Running backs C.J. Gable and Chevon Walker were a big part of the offence. You can tell that both guys have all the ability...they need just need opportunity. Walker was a high school superstar and Gable was a USC freshman sensation, but for whatever the reason ended up making their way up here. Last weeks 30-29 win showed their talent and when you include the injured Lindsey Lamar, the Ticats are as deep at running back as the Calgary Stampeders are in quarterbacks. Now Im not sure about the package of plays that Kent Austin has for Dan LeFevour. It did work - and LeFevour gained experience, but it took time away from Henry Burris. Where the big picture is concerned, Henry cant play forever. So its an excellent evaluation - it just feels awkward at the moment. Bakari Grant is starting to emerge as a solid receiver and Greg Ellingson has certainly been a nice surprise. And when Andy Fantuz gets back, Henry Burris will have some serious targets to work with. I continue to admire Mike Reillys work in Edmonton. The physical punishment he absorbed in the first half of the game did not effect the second half of his game. But hes going to have to learn self preservation skills. The two collisions he took running with the ball were shocking and just cant happen again. But once again, Reilly took his team to a single play victory and the next game for the Eskimos is not until the Aug. 18 in Toronto. It will be interesting to see what changes the that Ed Hervey and Kavis Reed make between now and then. In the Bombers-Lions game, all the focus was on Justin Goltz at quarterback for Winnnipeg.dddddddddddd. The Bombers organization and fans have been screaming for a quality durable quarterback and theres been no answer for years. That said, is Justin Goltz the answer? Maybe. On the plus side, he has his great moments - single, successful plays that make you say an enthusiastic YES! But is he going to improve on his short stint thus far or is this as good as it gets? A play here versus a play there will provide the tell-tale signs. With only two games as a starter under his belt, its too early to tell. And with the next game being Aug. 16 against Hamilton, theres no rush to evaulate just yet. On the negitive side, consistent passing is not there yet for Goltz. Too many of his passes were too high, too low or too far to the left and right. Now this is something to improve on, but it sure makes you appreciate the Ricky Rays and Anthony Calvillos of CFL football. Another concern has to be the high percentage of passes completed on the Bomber defence. They went into the game with the last three quarterbacks - Burris, Ray and Bo Levi Mitchell - hitting on 88 per cent. And Travis Lulay hit just about the same number. Not all is bad in Winnipeg now with a much better pass rush and Chad Simpson effective at running back. However, in the passing game thats embodies our league, youre destined to struggle until you master the passing offence and pass defence. For the Lions, something is missing - and its more abstract than tangible. I thought going into this game (after playing so poorly in the Toronto game) that it would be over at half time. But it wasnt and right now this Lions team is not as good as last years squad. One final thought - I will certainly be happy when the bye weeks are over. Players love the break - and I did too - but as a fan, I prefer my four games a week. And I think you do too. ' ' '
