MADISON, Wis. -- Wisconsin?outside linebacker Vince Biegel underwent surgery Thursday night to insert a screw into his cracked right foot and will miss the showdown Saturday with Michigan, the school confirmed Friday.?The Badgers said Biegel will be out several weeks.?I really hate any time a player has to miss time due to an injury, especially a senior like Vince, Wisconsin coach Paul Chryst said. Vince has such a passion for football and loves playing the game. This team is very important to him and he is very important to our team. What you appreciate is that you know he will do everything in his power to get back on the field as soon as possible.?Biegels father, Rocky, had told ESPN.com on Thursday of his sons procedure.?Hes been playing on it for the last couple weeks, and it was bothering him a little bit, Rocky Biegel said. He had X-rays last night and confirmed it was cracked. He either plays on it, and then if he breaks it, then hes going to be out for eight weeks. Either way, hes got to have surgery on it. So he can keep playing until it breaks or try to go through the season with it and try to fix it. At any time, he could break it all the way through. It was just a crack and theyre just putting a screw in it. Its a very, very minor crack. The Badgers said?Vince Biegel discussed his options with?team physicians Wednesday and Thursday before deciding on surgery.?The news is a blow to No. 8 Wisconsin (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) ahead of a huge game against No. 4 Michigan (4-0, 1-0) in Ann Arbor. Earlier Thursday, the Badgers announced that they would be without kicker Rafael Gaglianone for the season due to a back injury.Biegel, Wisconsins most experienced player, has played in 46 games with 32 starts. He ranks seventh in program history with 18.5 career sacks and was a third-team all-Big Ten selection last season. Pro Football Focus graded Biegel as the top returning 3-4 outside linebacker against the run, as a pass-rusher and overall.?This season, Biegel has nine tackles with two quarterback hurries and a sack.Redshirt freshman Zack Baun was listed as Biegels backup on the depth chart this week. Baun has six tackles and two tackles for loss in 2016. Backup outside linebacker Garret Dooley also has six tackles.Wisconsin also could shift linebacker Jack Cichy from inside to outside and move backup Ryan Connelly?to starting inside linebacker. The Badgers began the season unranked and vaulted into the top 10 for the first time in five years after victories against No. 5 LSU and No. 8 Michigan State. It marks the first time Wisconsin had defeated two AP top-10 teams since 1962, but the schedule over the next four games is perhaps even more daunting.According to ESPN Stats & Information, Wisconsin is projected to play the toughest October schedule of any FBS team, with games against Michigan, No. 2 Ohio State, Iowa and No. 15 Nebraska. Those four teams are a combined 14-1 this season. Clearance ECCO Mens Johannesburg Perf Slip On 623584-01014 MINK Sale . STORRS, Conn. -- Gabby Williams jumped early and totally whiffed the opening tipoff, eager to get a leg up on her taller Baylor opponent in the other half of the circle. If theres a metaphor for Williams play at UConn for the first two games of the season, that mistimed jump was it.The misstep will likely be a footnote after freshman Crystal Dangerfield scored 19 points to lead the third-ranked Huskies past No. 2 Baylor 72-61 on Thursday for their 77th consecutive victory. It is, however, characteristic of how Williams has started this season. The early minutes of the first two games have not been kind. Fresh off early foul trouble during UConns season-opening win against Florida State, Williams again found herself on the bench Thursday. She looked like she was well on her way to a big game early. The 5-foot-11 junior guard took a charge, had a monster block and hit a key bucket -- and then she picked up her second foul with 5:19 left in the first quarter, putting her on the bench for the rest of the half.I told myself I was never going to be in that position [in early foul trouble] again, and to be in it the next game was really frustrating for me, Williams said. While the Huskies are known for playing suffocating defense, discipline is another trademark. Huskies rarely foul out. But Williams wasnt the only UConn player in foul trouble. UConn finished tthe first half with Dangerfield, Kia Nurse, center Natalie Butler and freshmen Molly Bent and Kyla Irwin on the floor.dddddddddddd Thats not a typical lineup for the Huskies; they needed to reach deep into the bench to steer through the crisis. Our propensity to put ourselves in foul trouble these first two games is putting us in bad situations, UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. And we put ourselves in another bad one [tonight].UConn showed some mettle, though, putting four players in double figures and outdueling Baylors taller post players. Williams played all 20 minutes of the second half to finish with 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting, plus three assists, two blocks and two steals. She came up big when her team needed her most, making a huge steal with 2:15 left .For a lot of people, that [adversity] would affect them and shut them down, said Katie Lou Samuelson, who had 16 points. But she came out in the second half and was a huge spark for us. It was really important for her to do what she did. She took that charge and got our whole team really amped up.In the second half, Williams knew she had to play her game, but be smart and be clean, as she put it.I had to put mind over matter, she said. Im proud of how I came back.
