TEMPE, Ariz. -- Utah was concerned about Arizona States attacking defense. Turns out the Utes can bring a little pressure, too.Joe Williams had another big game in his post-retirement tour and No. 13 Utah had 11 sacks among its 22 tackles for loss, leading the Utes to a 49-26 win over Arizona State Thursday night. We just kept plugging away and the flood gates just opened up near the end of the game, Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said.Utah (8-2, 5-2 Pac-12, No. 15 CFP) overcame a slow start with a series of spectacular plays against the FBS worst passing defense to end an eight-game losing streak in Tempe.Williams ran for 181 yards and a pair of scores, giving him 844 yards and five touchdowns in four games since returning from a four-week retirement.Troy Williams threw for 296 yards and three of his four touchdown passes to Raelon Singleton, who had 116 yards on four catches to help the Utes stay within reach of No. 16 Colorado in the Pac-12 South.Utahs defense found a new level of pressure. The Utes harassed Arizona State quarterback Manny Wilkins all night, most of it coming from Hunter Dimick . The senior defensive end entered the game with seven sacks and nearly doubled his total against Wilkins, pulling him down five times to break the school record.Utah had six sacks in the fourth quarter and now has the two highest single-game sack totals in FBS this season after getting 10 against San Jose State on Sept. 17.We probably missed him a much as we got him, Dimick said. That dude was a freak athlete, but toward the end we fortunately were able to get him bottled up.Wilkins was adept at avoiding some tackles with some how-did-he-do-that moves in his return from injury, but also made some key mistakes. He threw an interception in the end zone in the first quarter and Chase Hansen put the game put the game out of reach by returning an interception 43 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter.Wilkins finished with 309 yards and a touchdown on 19-of-31 passing. Those are completely mental errors on my part, errors I cant make, Wilkins said.Arizona State (5-5, 2-5) had plenty of mistakes in its defensive secondary again. The Sun Devils held Utah to 27 total yards in the first quarter, but once the Utes got one big play, they kept `em coming.Singleton got the first one, shedding a tackling along the sideline on a 64-yard touchdown . It was the 13th touchdown of 50 yards or more allowed by Arizona State this season.Utahs next touchdown wasnt over 50 yards, but it was spectacular: Siaosi Wilson laying out for a 27-yard catch just inside the pylon, held up by official review. The Sun Devils went back to their defensive lapsing at the end of the second quarter, inexplicably leaving Singleton open -- no one was within 15 yards of him -- in the end zone for a 17-yard score.Williams had the 14th scoring play of 50-plus yards against Arizona State to open the third quarter, breaking a couple tackles on an 82-yard touchdown run. They had a great game plan and stuck to it, Arizona State safety Marcus Ball said. They did some things and schemes, but down the stretch we had some self-inflicted wounds that cost us.SPECTACULAR SUN DEVILSArizona State had a pair of spectacular touchdown of its own.NKeal Harry had one in the second quarter, covering about 50 yards while dodging numerous tacklers on a botched fake play turned into a 31-yard scoring run.Tim White added another in the third quarter, somehow getting a foot down at the edge of the end zone for a 12-yard score.THE TAKEAWAYUtahs defense was at its harassing best and its offense had a nice balance, setting the Utes up nicely for the seasons final two games.Arizona State got a spark from Wilkins return, but couldnt protect him or stop giving up big plays on defense. The Sun Devils need to win one of their final two games to become bowl eligible.UP NEXTUtah hosts Oregon next Saturday before playing at No. 16 Colorado in a potential showdown for the Pac-12 South title.Arizona State hosts No. 4 Washington next Saturday before playing at rival Arizona in its regular-season finale.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org---This story has been corrected to show Arizona States record is 5-5, 2-5. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessees defense is receiving plenty of unwanted opportunities to showcase its improved depth.Injuries have sidelined three of Tennessees top defensive players at various points in the season, yet the 11th-ranked Volunteers remain unbeaten thanks to contributions from backups who have stepped in as capable replacements. With all the injuries and stuff that weve seen, the next man thats behind that guy has stepped in and just played tremendous, linebacker Cortez McDowell said.Tennessee (4-0, 1-0 SEC) will need to keep that going Saturday when it visits No. 25 Georgia (3-1, 1-1) without the services of linebacker Darrin Kirkland Jr. and cornerback Cam Sutton. Kirkland will miss a third straight game with a high ankle sprain and Sutton will sit out his second game since fracturing his right ankle. The Vols are hoping to have linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin back for Georgia after he missed the majority of Tennessees last two games with a shoulder injury. Tennessee coach Butch Jones said Wednesday night on his Vol Calls radio show that Reeves-Maybin had another MRI so were waiting on word from there to see how his health is progressing.Reeves-Maybin and Sutton were selected as team captains before the season along with quarterback Joshua Dobbs and running back Alvin Kamara. Kirkland was Tennessees leading tackler before his injury.A lot of teams cannot recover from that, Jones said. Weve had some individuals step up and play winning football for us. ... Ive been real proud of these individuals for stepping up because those are three great football players that you take out of your lineup. Its hard to replace those three. The reinforcements have included McDowell and Colton Jumper.McDowell has stepped in for Reeves-Maybin and has 21 tackles, one off the team lead. McDowell and Quarte Sapp were both expected to back up Reeves-Maybin at weak-side linebacker, but Sapp tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Tennessees second game, knocking him out for the remainder of the season.Jumper, a former walk-on, had a team-high eight tackles Saturday in a 388-28 victory over No.dddddddddddd 23 Florida while filling in for Kirkland at Mike linebacker. Jumper had been Tennessees season-opening starter last year before moving to a reserve role, but he has played much better this year. That (experience) helps really with the nerves, coming into it, Jumper said. Just having starts under my belt and having some game reps, that really helps. ... I think my confidence level has gone up a little bit, and that helps a lot.Suttons injury has represented the biggest loss for Tennessees defense so far, and the four-year starter isnt coming back anytime soon. Jones said Wednesday there is a possibility that he may be able to get back for maybe the last couple of games of the year.Florida exposed Suttons absence last week with a couple of deep passes that set up the Gators first two touchdowns as Tennessee fell behind 21-0. But the defense played much better later as Tennessee rallied.Freshman cornerback Baylen Buchanan, the son of former NFL defensive back Ray Buchanan, is expected to make his first career start Saturday as Tennessee attempts to replace Sutton. Justin Martin had started in Suttons old spot last week but struggled early in the Florida game. While all these injuries have forced backups into bigger roles, Tennessees remaining healthy starters also have picked up the slack. Nobody has contributed more in that regard than defensive end Derek Barnett, who recorded two sacks against Florida to increase his career total to 22.He means as much to this team and this unit as any player on any team on any unit, defensive coordinator Bob Shoop said.Barnett passes the credit around by pointing out the way the rest of the defense has performed. We lost a few guys, but its next man up, Barnett said. It just goes to show we have a lot of young guys in this program who are very talented. Theyve all stepped up and really played well.---Online: The APs college football page: http://collegfootball.ap.org ' ' '
