STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Penn States athletic department on Thursday announced plans to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Joe Paternos first game as coach, a move that sparked backlash on social networks by people critical of Paternos role in the Jerry Sandusky child sex abuse scandal. The university announced plans Thursday to mark the anniversary when the Nittany Lions football team hosts Temple on Sept. 17.University spokesman Jeff Nelson told The Associated Press that Penn State plans to announce specifics of the commemoration to ticket holders during the week of the game. He declined further comment on the plans.Paterno coached at Penn State for 46 seasons, becoming college footballs winningest coach. But the coach was fired by the schools board of trustees shortly after Sandusky, who was his defensive coordinator, was arrested in November 2011 for child sexual abuse. Paterno died in January 2012 of lung cancer. The announcement to honor Paternos first game was met with disdain on social media sites from those who partially blame Paterno for the scandal. In May, unsealed court documents said an alleged Sandusky victim said he complained to Paterno about Sandusky in 1976 and was rebuffed. The universitys president has said the allegation was not substantiated in court or tested by any other process. Paterno was never charged with a crime related to the scandal.Sandusky was convicted on 45 of 48 charges in June 2012 and is serving a 30- to 60-year sentence.Moving forward from the scandal has proven a difficult challenge for Penn State, requiring leaders to balance distancing the university from the scandal while juggling the wishes of ardent Penn State supporters who credit Paterno for giving the university an identity to be proud of.Depending on their position people may look at him differently, but it doesnt change that he created that here. Or helped to create that here, Athletic Director Sandy Barbour told the AP in August. The Paterno Foundation had already scheduled a private celebration of the 50th anniversary of Paternos first game as head coach with a Football Lettermens reunion on Sept. 16 at Lubrano Park in State College. Penn State alum and university trustee Anthony Lubrano has been part of a group of Paterno supporters that have been pushing for the school to officially recognize the anniversary. The statue of Paterno was removed from outside Beaver Stadium on July 22, 2012 and highly visible, university sponsored signs of him are mostly hard to find. Paternos name is still on the campus library, which was built in part by his donations. Tobin Heath USA Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. Morgan Brian USA Jersey . Toronto has dropped games to Indiana and Miami since a five-game winning streak and closed out a three-game road trip at 1-2. .C. -- Charlotte Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said after all of these years in the NBA hes still amazed at some of the things LeBron James does. Blank USA Jersey . -- Five former Kansas City Chiefs players who were on the team between 1987 and 1993 filed a lawsuit Tuesday claiming the team hid and even lied about the risks of head injuries during that time period when there was no collective bargaining agreement in place in the NFL. Morgan Brian Jersey . The Brazilian goalkeeper signed a loan deal with the Major League Soccer club on Friday as he looks to get playing time ahead of this summers World Cup in his home country. MILWAUKEE -- Once again, the Golden State Warriors will bring a winning streak into Milwaukee, where theyll face the Bucks Saturday night at the Bradley Center. But unlike a year ago, when Golden State opened the season with 24 consecutive victories, its safe to assume Bucks ownership wont be printing up celebratory t-shirts in the event of a Milwaukee victory. No, this time, the Warriors streak sits at a modest five games following a 20-point victory Friday night in Boston -- one fueled largely by a suffocating defense. Were flying around, helping each other, getting our hand on basketballs, getting out on transition, Kevin Durant said. It was incredible to watch. Weve got to continue to build on that.Bucks fans will see a familiar face in the blue and yellow; Warriors center Zaza Pachulia spent three seasons with the Bucks and was a key contributor when Milwaukee stormed into the playoffs in Jason Kidds first season at the helm.I (follow the Bucks), because I was there for two years, Pachulia told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. I built really great relationships with the players.Kevin Durant was Golden States high-profile acquisition during the offseason but Pachulia, a 14-year veteran still chasing his first championship, has been a welcome addition to a team trying to make a third consecutive trip to the Finals. Were so happy to have him, head coach Steve Kerr said. He couldve gone elsewhere and made more money, but hes smart, hes tough. ... Hes exactly what weve needed.Pachulias former team has been strugggling.ddddddddddddMilwaukee has lost two in a row and four of its last five contests and comes into the game looking to bounce back after a pair of ugly defeats at Atlanta and Miami earlier this week. The Bucks scored just 25 second-half points against the Heat, their lowest point total of the season. We took turns with one guy just literally trying to drive the ball, Kidd said. Its a great example for our young team to understand you can get in foul trouble and still have an impact on the game. (Hassan Whiteside) did a really good job of controlling the paint, protecting the rim.One of the few bright spots for the Bucks during this stretch has been the play of Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker. Antetokounmpo is averaging career highs in points (21.1), rebounds (8.7), assists (5.4), blocks (2.2) and steals (1.7) per game and is the only player in the NBA averaging over 20.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.5 steals per game.Parker is averaging 20.8 points in eight games this month and is shooting 45 percent from the floor this season. But the Bucks will need more -- much more -- help from the rest of the roster if they hope to knock off the Warriors like they did a year ago.Weve got to look at it and find a way to get better, Kidd said. Weve got to start trusting one another and not panic.Just remember its a team sport and not one guy can do it by himself. ' ' '
