CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Even when things go horribly wrong on the road, the St. Louis Cardinals can always count on one soothing stop. No matter how deep their slump, itll end in Cincinnati. Matt Carpenter broke his 0-for-23 slump with a bases-loaded double during the decisive rally, and the Cardinals ended a tough trip on the upswing by beating the Reds 15-2 on Sunday. The Cardinals went 3-8 on a trip that included seven straight losses -- four of them in Pittsburgh, allowing the Pirates to overtake them for the NL Central lead. On their final stop, an offence that couldnt do much of anything found a little bit of everything. "Offensively, we did a terrific job," manager Mike Matheny said. "We had a little bit of everything -- some power, some good situational hitting, made the (defensive) plays." Its been like that against the Reds lately. St. Louis took two of three at Great American Ball Park and has won its last six series against Cincinnati, its best such stretch against the Reds since 2003-04. The Cardinals lead the season series 8-4. "Some teams you play better than others, but theyve got our number for sure," said Reds starter Mike Leake (10-5), who gave up a season-high seven runs. "They play us tough. Its on us to try to figure them out because theyve got us figured out for the most part." The Cardinals scored their most runs against Cincinnati since 1993. Theyve scored at least 10 runs against the Reds in four games this season, the first time theyve done that since 1980. Carpenters two-run double off the wall completed a five-run rally in the sixth against Leake and two relievers, setting up another blowout. "Its a great feeling," Carpenter said. "Its even better that we come back and win the series in a convincing fashion. It was fun to join in on the action." Matt Adams, David Freese and Tony Cruz homered for the Cardinals, who have scored 13, 13, 3 and 15 runs in their last four games. St. Louis finished with 19 hits and a season high in runs. Every starter except Lance Lynn drove in at least one run. Lynn (13-5) allowed four hits in eight innings, including Zack Cozarts two-run homer. Lynn struck out a season-high 11 and joined Adam Wainwright as 13-game winners in a rotation that has the NLs third-best ERA. "I had pretty good command of all four pitches, and I was able to use all of them on both sides of the plate," Lynn said. "That makes it a lot easier to pitch. Between my last three starts, Ive had the best stuff Ive had all year. " The Reds have dropped seven of nine, leaving the defending NL Central champions marooned in third place. The Cardinals scored in the first inning of all three games of the series. They scored four off Bronson Arroyo on Friday night, one on Saturday and four more on Sunday off Leake, who had allowed a total of four runs in his last three starts combined. Matt Holliday and Freese had RBI doubles, and Adams hit a two-run homer -- his first since July 6 -- for the 4-0 lead only 19 pitches into the game. Holliday improved to 9 for 20 career off Leake. The Cardinals sent 10 batters to the plate for five runs in the sixth, aided by a pair of errors. They opened the inning with five consecutive hits, and Carpenters two-run double off Logan Ondrusek made it 9-2 and gave the second baseman relief from his personal slump. "At that point, I was so relieved to just put the barrel of the bat on the ball that I didnt care what happened," Carpenter said. The Cardinals hit only nine homers in July, including one after the All-Star break. They had six in three days at Great American Ball Park. Reds third baseman Todd Frazier went without a hit for his ninth straight game, leaving him in an 0-for-28 slump. Its the longest by a Reds player since Drew Stubbs went 0 for 32 midway through last season. Notes: The Cardinals play 17 of their next 24 games at Busch Stadium. They open a 10-game homestand on Monday against the Dodgers, with Wainwright trying for his 14th victory. ... The Reds are off on Monday before resuming their homestand with a pair of games against the Athletics. ... Cardinals OF Carlos Beltran got a day of rest. ... Reds LH reliever Sean Marshall and RH starter Johnny Cueto still havent resumed throwing. Marshall, on the DL since May 24 with a sore left shoulder, had a setback before the All-Star break. Cueto has been sidelined since June 5 with a strained muscle in the back of his shoulder. Dolphins Jerseys Online .S. The players spoke Jan. 13 during a Major League Baseball Players Association conference call after Rodriguez sued the union and Major League Baseball to overturn an arbitrators decision suspending him for the 2014 season and post-season. PHILADELPHIA -- Phillies manager Pete Mackanin enjoyed watching Jake Thompson pitch on Sunday. That was about it.Thompson pitched seven effective innings, but Philadelphia managed just five hits in a 2-0 loss to Julio Teheran and the Atlanta Braves. It was nice to see, Mackanin said. After his first four outings with us we werent sure about what we were seeing, but his last two outings, especially today, he pitched extremely well.Thompson (1-5) allowed one run and four hits in his second consecutive quality start after a shaky beginning to his big league career. The right-hander struck out six and walked four.Teheran (5-9) allowed five hits in six innings. The right-hander improved to 5-1 with a 1.55 ERA in six career starts in Philadelphia.Everything is coming together, Teheran said. I feel really good. The last two innings I really battled, but I made pitches.Teheran cruised through the first four innings, and then wriggled out of bases-loaded jams in the fifth and sixth. Maikel Franco grounded out for the final out of the fifth and Peter Bourjos lined to right on Teherans final pitch. He was really good, Braves manager Brian Snitker said. That last inning he battled his butt off. Hes healthy now and his velocity is back up. Hes back where he needs to be.Jim Johnson worked the ninth for his 15th save.Matt Kemp, who was acquired in a July 30 trade with San Diego, hit a leadoff drive in the second for his 28th homer. Freddie Freeman added another leadoff drive in the eighth for his 29th of the year. Its never fun to lose, but I thought I threw the ball well other than one bad pitch in the second inning, Thompson said. Its nice to know they have confidence in me to get out of those (tough) situations as well.Like Teheran, Thompson got into a couple of jams but also pitched out of them, getting Nick Markakis to ground into a double play to escape aa bases-loaded situation in the sixth and retiring Adonis Garcia on a grounder to third with the bases loaded in the seventh.ddddddddddddThe loss for the Phillies marked only the fourth time in franchise history that they dropped every game of a homestand of six games or longer. They also did it earlier this season. The other two times were in 1883 and 1964.It was a miserable homestand, Mackanin said. What did we score, 11 runs? Were striking out too much and we dont have a good two-strike approach. We dont have a lot of plate discipline. ... We just need to be more professional at the plate.SURGINGAtlanta center fielder Ender Inciarte extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a single in the sixth inning. ... Freeman extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the fourth. He has reached safely in 27 straight for the longest active streak in the majors. The double was the 200th of his career.PUNCHLESS PHILLIESThe Phillies were shut out for the eighth time this season. They have scored the fewest runs in the majors this season (500).REINFORCEMENTS COMINGAfter shutting down Vince Velazquez following his start Saturday because he reached his innings limit, Phillies general manager Matt Klentak said Alec Asher likely would be recalled to take his place in the rotation. Klentak said he expected about a half-dozen more players to be recalled once the minor league playoff season ends.UP NEXTBraves: RHP Ryan Weber (1-0, 5.24 ERA) opposes Nationals RHP Max Scherzer (15-7, 2.89 ERA) in the opener of a three-game series in Washington on Monday afternoon.Phillies: RHP Jerad Eickhoff (9-13, 3.90 ERA) faces Marlins RHP Jake Esch (0-0, 4.15 ERA) in the first game of a three-game series in Miami on Monday afternoon.
