Offense wins championships in the new NFL.For the first time since the league expanded to 32 teams in 2002 Dont’a Hightower Jersey Stitched , none of the teams playing in the conference title game have a defense ranked in the top 10 in total yards. Only New England is among the top 10 in fewest points allowed. But the Chiefs, Patriots, Saints and Rams do possess the four most prolific offenses in the league. That’s the first time the four highest-scoring teams play for the conference championship during the Super Bowl era. It’s fitting one of those teams will win the Vince Lombardi Trophy because offense dominated in 2018. The 1,371 touchdowns scored were the most in a season in league history, and the 11,952 points scored were the second-most ever. The two teams with the stingiest defenses — Chicago and Baltimore — reached the playoffs but lost at home in the wild-card round.“You have explosive players in the postseason, guys who are extremely talented, guys who are represented in the Pro Bowl, the All-Pro team,” Saints coach Sean Payton said Wednesday. The success starts at quarterback with Tom Brady, Drew Brees, Patrick Mahomes and Jared Goff leading the way. Brady’s Patriots are the only team of the four that didn’t average at least 30 points Youth Donald Trump Jerseys , scoring 27.3. Kansas City led the way at 35.3 with Mahomes throwing 50 touchdown passes. Los Angeles was next at 32.9 and New Orleans averaged 31.5.Elite QBs aren’t the only thing these teams have in common. The Rams, Patriots and Saints were among the top six in rushing.C.J. Anderson (123 yards) and Todd Gurley (115) had big games as Los Angeles ran for 273 yards in a 30-22 win against Dallas in the divisional round.Sony Michel ran for 129 yards and three TDs in New England’s 41-28 victory over the Chargers last week. Brady also threw for 343 yards.Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram combined for 124 yards rushing as New Orleans held on to beat Philadelphia 20-14. Brees had 301 yards passing and two scores.“They can beat you in both ways, they can run it or they can throw it,” Rams coach Sean McVay said of the Saints. “That’s what really presents such a great challenge because they’ve got a Hall of Fame quarterback and they got an elite running back, and they’ve got a great system.”The Chiefs were in the middle of the pack on the ground during the season, but Damien Williams had 129 yards in a 31-13 rout of the Colts.“Andy’s an offensive coach, so the offensive plays they get on special teams and the offensive plays they get on offense, when you combine all of that together, it’s a lot of firepower and a lot of explosive plays,” Patriots coach Bill Belichick said of the Chiefs. “Andy’s teams are always tough, well-disciplined. They don’t make a lot of mistakes. They make you beat them, and that’s hard to do because they’re sound and he gets good players and he coaches them well and they’re tough.”Other than Belichick Donald Trump Jerseys Stitched , each team has offensive-minded coaches. Payton, Reid and McVay earned their way on that side of the ball. The 32-year-old McVay is the youngest coach to win a playoff game. Both games are rematches from thrilling, high-scoring contests in the regular season. The Patriots (12-5) beat the Chiefs (14-3) 43-40 at home in October. The Saints (14-3) defeated the Rams (14-3) 45-35 at home in November. Here’s a look inside more numbers heading into championship Sunday:THREE’S COMPANYThe Patriots are trying to join Buffalo (1990-93) and Miami (1971-73) as the third team to reach the Super Bowl three consecutive seasons.HOME-FIELD ADVANTAGEIf the Saints and Chiefs win, it’ll be the 14th time since 1975 that the two top seeds meet in the Super Bowl and the fifth time in six years.100<button class="view-gallery">View Gallery</button> Gallery:View from the sidelines: NFL cheerleaders 2018Raj Mehta-USA TODAY Sports | Raj Mehta NFL teams proposed major changes to replay and overtime on Saturday after a season of consistent criticism of officiating and which plays can be challenged or automatically reviewed.Among the proposals teams have made to the league’s competition committee are an increase in the number of plays subject to video replay review and a change to the overtime format. The idea of more or even unlimited coaches’ challenges is not new, but could have stronger support now. Also, the league is reluctant to expand replays for officiating because it would slow games even further. The competition committee will present teams’ proposals and some of its own to the 32 owners at the league meetings March 24-27.Several teams are proposing major moves.Washington wants any play to be subject to coaches’ challenges or to automatic review by the officiating department in New York. The Redskins also suggested that all personal fouls be subject to review, while Kansas City added potential personal fouls that were not called on the field be looked at.Philadelphia seeks scoring plays and turnovers negated by a penalty be immediately reviewed, and Denver suggests adding all fourth-down plays that are spotted short of a first down or the goal line, and all extra-point tries. The Rams, Panthers, Seahawks and Eagles want to include reviews of designated player safety-related fouls whether called or not on the field.Kansas City proposes that both teams possess the ball at least one time in overtime even if the first team with the ball scores a touchdown. The Chiefs also want to eliminate overtime for the preseason, and get rid of the overtime coin toss so that the winner of the coin toss to begin the game may choose whether to kick or receive Youth Stephen Gostkowski Jerseys , or which goal to defend in OT.Fans and many media members have vociferously expressed displeasure with the current system regarding coaches’ challenges since a blown call late in the NFC championship game — officials missed a blatant pass interference penalty and a helmet-first hit by the Rams’ Nickell Robey-Coleman deep in Los Angeles territory. The non-calls helped Los Angeles force overtime and eventually win the game to reach the Super Bowl. But New York Giants owner John Mara said last month at the NFL combine that the powerful competition committee might not feel the same way.“I just don’t sense a lot of support to use replay to call penalties. I don’t sense a lot of support for the expansion of it, either,” Mara said. “We’re early on, so that might change, but that’s my sense of where we are right now. I’m not saying it won’t change.”While the league is wary of expanded replays, the Eagles’ suggestion on scoring plays and turnovers negated by penalty being reviewed could garner support.Kansas City’s overtime proposals also stem from recent developments, including the Chiefs losing the AFC championship after rallying to tie New England. The Patriots won the coin toss, drove downfield and scored a touchdown without KC ever touching the ball. The 2017 Super Bowl ended in similar fashion.Denver recommended an alternative to onside kicks by allowing a team once during the fourth quarter to play offense instead. That team must notify the referee of its intention to forgo a kickoff or safety kick. The ball will be spotted on the kicking team’s 35-yard line and that team will have one down to gain 15 yards, essentially a fourth-and-15 play. If the play succeeds in gaining a first down, that team keeps possession as if it recovered an onside kick.
