When cricketers and fans visit Pune these days, their itinerary has three must-dos: visit the ultra-modern cricket stadium at Gahunje, dine at the restaurant owned by Zaheer Khan, and spend as much time as they can at Blades of Glory.Every minute spent at this unique museum, housed in a 4000square foot flat in a primarily residential suburb of Pune, is worth it. Where else in the world can you find a bat signed by each of the members of every major team of the 2011 World Cup? Or bats signed by Indias ten World Cup teams? Or by each of the ten World Cup-winning squads - from Clive Lloyds 1975 West Indies to MS Dhonis 2011 India?Among the other artefacts on view are memorabilia signed by five modern-day triple-centurions, and balls autographed by 22 of the 25 members of the 300 Test wicket club. The man behind the museum is Rohan Pate, son of the owner of a major construction group and a club cricketer who played in Maharashtra and England. Incredibly, putting together Blades of Glorys extraordinary collection took Pate less than two years. The inevitable Sachin Tendulkar connection is not hard to find. During the 2010 IPL, Pate met Tendulkar for the first time and got him to sign a bat for him. Soon afterwards, Pates father tried to rope in Tendulkar as a brand ambassador for their construction firm, and Pate went to Tendulkars managers office in Mumbai, where he saw on display a bat signed by some of the legends of the game.It was a eureka moment. Till then I used to collect autographs in a diary, says Pate, as we walk through the Legends Room, which houses bats signed by Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and Ricky Ponting, and a golden bat autographed by Don Bradman; and the room dedicated to Tendulkar. But after seeing that bat, I thought I should aim for something bigger, unique and exclusive. He became obsessed with the idea and was soon a regular fixture at cricket series across the globe. In 2011, he travelled to Sri Lanka for a series between the hosts and Australia, and says he found players from both teams very welcoming. The IPL turned out to be a boon, since almost every major achiever in international cricket features in it. Pate went to the UAE for Englands series against Pakistan, where Ijaz Ahmed helped me a great deal in getting through to most of the current and past Pakistan greats. He capped the year with two of his most memorable experiences. While Indias tours to England and Australia in 2011-12 were disastrous, Pates trips to those countries during the series were so successful that by the time he returned from Australia, he was sure the museum could be opened to the public during the 2012 IPL.I was taken aback by the warm response from the English players. Players like Matt Prior, for example, were so nice that they used to call me saying, We are staying at this hotel. Give me a bat in the morning, and take back the autographed bat in the evening.Australia, of course, was the biggest target, since they have been world champions four times. I spent exactly 15 days Down Under and managed to get 47 autographs. The preparations for the first anniversary of the museums opening are in full swing, but Pate isnt satisfied with the approximately 10,000 visitors (including nearly 150 high-profile cricketers) who have made it to the facility. He has tied up with many schools in Pune so that their students can come and marvel at memorabilia of the great achievers of the game. He also plans to move the museum into a sprawling 25,000 sq ft venue over the next two years. The memorabilia is increasing every day and the space here is not sufficient to accommodate all of it, Pate says, as he acknowledges receipt of a consignment from the West Indies sent by his good friend Desmond Haynes. If you want to visit Blades of Glory, be sure to take an appointment through its website. The entry fee is a reasonable Rs 50. I dont intend to convert this facility into a profit-making venture, Pate says. In fact, I am planning to put this money back into the game, either in the form of providing cricket gear to budding cricketers who cant afford it, or by offering scholarships to youngsters. Goalie Roberto Luongo, getting the call in place of Game 1 starter Carey Price, was solid when needed in making 23 saves for the shutout. Hydro Flask Australia . Most important, perhaps, it went off without a hitch. The big first baseman found a way to say thanks. Freeman celebrated his newly won All-Star berth by driving in four runs with three hits and Atlanta beat Mat Latos and the Cincinnati Reds 6-5 on Thursday night. Freeman held off Dodgers rookie Yasiel Puig to win the fan voting for the final spot on NL All-Star roster. He received more than 19 million votes, a record. The support from the fans continued into the game as he received a long ovation before his first at-bat. "I wasnt expecting it," Freeman said, adding the ovation was "pretty cool." After backing out of the batters box, Freeman approached the plate and with fans still chanting "Freddie! Freddie!" he hit a two-run double to centre field on his first pitch to drive in Andrelton Simmons and Justin Upton. "A load off the shoulders," Freeman said. "They voted for you. You want to go out and deliver for them." The first baseman drove in two runs with a first-inning double and added run-scoring singles in the second and fourth innings. Reds manager Dusty Baker said it was Freemans day. "Hes riding high," Baker said. "The All-Star selection, he has everything going for him right now. Its probably a pleasure and a joy to be Freddie Freeman right now." Justin Upton also had three hits to help Tim Hudson (6-7) earn his second straight win. Craig Kimbrel pitched the ninth for his 25th save. Braves right fielder Jason Heyward left the game in the second inning with a strained right hamstring and said he wont play on Friday. Latos (8-3) lasted only four innings in his shortest start of the season. He allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks. The six earned runs allowed matched his season high. "He got a few balls in the heart of the plate," Baker said. "Thats probably the worst outing Matts had since hes been here." Latos agreed he was hurt by "laying the ball right down the middle" and said the Braves lineup is imposing. "That lineups stacked, one through eight," Latos said. "Its tough not to give up runs and give up hard-hit balls whenever youre throwing the ball down the middle. I just couldnt make the adjustment." Devin Mesoraco led off the Cincinnati ninth with a single. Hudson issued a one-out walk to Joey Votto before giving up run-scoring singles to Phillips and Jay Bruce. Choo doubled in the third inning and scored on Vottos sacrifice fly. He walked in the fifth and scored on Vottos infield hit and third baseman Chris Johnsons throwing error. The Reds cut Atlantas lead to 6-5 with a run off Jordan Walden in the eighth. Cozart reached on Simmons throwing error and scored on Phillips double. With runners on first and second, Walden struck out Todd Frazier and ended the eighth on Chris Heiseys fly. Heyward strained his right hamstring on a slide at third base in the second inning. Heyward, who reached on a throwing error by Votto, advanced to third on Justin Uptons infield hit. Heyward was running from second base when he appeared to make a last-second decision to slide into third. He said he first felt tightness in the hamstring "about a step and a half" before the slide. Safe on the play, Heyward remained on the ground at third base before finally rising to his feet and walking off the field, accompanied by manager Fredi Gonzalez. "No pop. Just pain," Heyward said, adding the hamstring was "sore right now, tight" after having ice on the leg.
