There were no first-round dramas for Andy Murray as he eased past countryman Liam Broady to open his Wimbledon campaign. After being taken to five sets in his first two matches at the French Open, Murray needed just an hour and 43 minutes to defeat 22-year-old wild card Broady 6-2, 6-3, 6-4.The 2013 champion will hope for more of the same from his next match on Thursday against Chinese Taipeis Lu Yen-hsun.Murray said of his performance: I served pretty well. Offensively I thought I did some good stuff. Maybe defensively I could have done a little bit better. But the first match is always tricky. Obviously Liam... weve never played each before although weve practised a lot and its not that easy playing someone you know so well, but I did okay. When we started the match were both trying to win but it doesnt make it any easier. You just want to go out and try to play a good match. This was Murrays first match against a fellow British player at a grand slam, and the first involving two British players since Tim Henman beat Greg Rusedski in the first round of the US Open a decade ago.Not since Henman defeated Martin Lee in 2001, meanwhile, had there been a meeting of home players at Wimbledon in the mens singles. It was a huge occasion for Broady, who made Marcus Willis-style headlines on day one last year when he came from two sets down to defeat Marinko Matosevic. He has practised a few times with Murray and admitted the first time he was so nervous he struggled to put the ball in the court.Broady soon found out why the world No. 2 is such a formidable opponent, winning just one point in the first three games before getting on the board, no doubt much to his relief.Coach Ivan Lendl, back in Murrays box for the first time at a grand slam since their reunion, had stressed the need for his charge not to waste energy and would therefore have been very happy to see him keep his foot down and break serve again to clinch the set.Blustery conditions on Centre Court were not making it easy for either player, with Broady struggling to time his forehand. It looked very much like Liam was heading the same way as his sister Naomi, who lost to Elina Svitolina on Monday, when he double-faulted to trail 3-1 in the second set.He was getting a warm reception from the Centre Court crowd and he pumped his fist to a great cheer after finishing a fine point with a forehand winner, but a game later Murray wrapped up the set. This was a stroll on the lawns for Murray and he jogged back to his chair after breaking serve again at the start of the third set.The first signs of frustration for the home favourite came as Broady did an excellent job of keeping him out on court. The Stockport player even had two chances to break the Murray serve but the 29-year-old lifted himself out of second gear to save them and clinched his first match point with a dinked forehand. It was a timely finish from Murray, with the Centre Court covers coming on seconds after the pair had walked off court, as rain arrived.Meanwhile, world No. 4, Stan Wawrinka, is also through,?beating the highly-rated American Taylor Fritz.Eighteen-year-old Fritz is clearly a mature individual -- he is already engaged to be married -- and can look back on his show with great pride, taking a set as the Swiss won 7-6 (7/4), 6-1, 6-7 (7/2), 6-4.Earlier, British No. 2?Aljaz Bedene had suffered a straight-sets defeat to Richard Gasquet. The Slovenian-born Bedene, who moved to Hertfordshire in 2008, is yet to play his best tennis on grass and he struggled to trouble the Frenchman, who won 6-3, 6-4, 6-3.Gasquet, the seventh seed and a potential quarterfinal opponent for Murray, will play either Spains Marcel Granollers or Victor Estrella Burgos of the Dominican Republic in the second round.More to follow... Pierce was ejected in the third quarter of Indianas 103-86 win Monday. George Hill stole a bad pass and was going in for a layup, and Pierce hustled back and appeared to be trying to wrap him up. http://www.redohou.com/ . At a news conference Tuesday where it was thought that the fiery Schallibaum may be shown the door after a dismal finish to the Major League Soccer season, team president Joey Saputo said no decision has been made on whether the Swiss Volcano will be back in 2014. Halladay signed a one-day contract with the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday that allowed the veteran right-hander to retire as a member of team with which he broke into the majors and spent the bulk of his distinguished 16-year career. Hey, happy belated Thanksgiving, all. What better way to get over a sleep-inducing tryptophan overload than the prospect of 11 NHL games on Black Friday. Heres a look at two of my favorites:Winnipeg Jets at Nashville Predators, 6 p.m. ETIts a big weekend for these two Central Division foes as they play home-and-home Friday and Sunday. The Jets, so full of promise with youngsters Mark Scheifele (23 points, third in the league in scoring) and rookie Patrik Laine (tied for second in the league with 12 goals) leading the way, are off the rails again after losing four in a row. Goaltending remains an unsettled issue, as the Jets are 23rd in goals allowed per game, and until that gets resolved, it will be hard to consider the Jets real playoff contenders. That said, theyll come to Nashville one point behind the Preds, who sit in the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference. The Predators -- and superstar defenseman P.K. Subban -- have started to play the kind of hockey most of us expected from them at the start of the season, and are on a nice 6-2 run. More importantly, goalie Pekka Rinne is on fire and has won six of seven and has allowed just nine goals over that stretch.ddddddddddddColumbus Blue Jackets at Tampa Bay Lightning, 7:30 p.m. ETThe Blue Jackets looked poised to make legions of hockey prognosticators look bad after a nice 8-1-1 run, but theyre heading into Tampa on Friday night winless in two and the leagues top-ranked power play is on a mini 0-5 skid. The Lightning, meanwhile, are proving that life without captain Steven Stamkos might not be pleasant, but that doesnt mean they have to stop piling up the points. The Lightning, led by Nikita Kucherov (four goals and two assists in five games), have won five of six and outscored opponents 20-9 as they continue to battle the Montreal Canadiens for top spot in the Atlantic Division. So this will be a good test for the Blue Jackets, who will get a rematch with the Lightning in Columbus on Tuesday, looking to prove that theyre really back in the hunt.
