are left to try again in Tokyo 2020 for the programs first gold Antworten

NEW YORK -- Daniel Murphy emphatically flipped his bat to the ground while he ran to first on his RBI single to centre field. Take that Brett Gardner. Murphy had the go-ahead hit in the eighth after being denied a homer by Gardner two innings earlier, and the New York Mets rallied to beat the rival Yankees 2-1 Monday night for their second straight home win after losing eight in a row. "I was fairly angry after he took that from us," Murphy said. David Wright hit his first home run at Citi Field this year leading off the seventh. Murphy came through against David Robertson (3-1) to hand the Yankees their first loss in 23 games when leading after six innings. Murphys drive to left-centre in the sixth was caught above the wall by Gardner to end the inning. The Yankees also threw out a runner at home plate in the eighth just before Murphy singled to centre field. Brandon Lyon (2-2) pitched a scoreless eighth in relief of an impressive Jonathon Niese. Bobby Parnell pitched the ninth for his eighth save. His first save against the Yankees was a coming of age of sorts in manager Terry Collins opinion. "If youre going to pitch in this city and youre going to be a closer in this city youve got to pitch in big, big-time situations," Collins said. "This isnt a playoff game but this is the Subway Series and this means a lot to a lot of people." With the Mets entering at 11 games under .500 and the Yankees playing without several of their injured All-Stars, the Subway Series seemed to have lost much of its lustre. There were plenty of empty seats throughout Citi Field and the 32,911 fans were awfully quiet for a game between these clubs. That could change come Tuesday night, when the Mets send young ace Matt Harvey to the mound against the Yankees most consistent starter, Hiroki Kuroda, in the second of four straight games between the teams. "We Harv going tomorrow, it provides us some momentum," Wright said. "If were going to climb our way back into the thing and start heading towards .500 were going to have to win these close games ... hopefully we can ride this momentum into tomorrow with Matts start." Niese and Phil Hughes showed they could be pretty good, too. Both pitchers are having inconsistent seasons but they worked quickly into the sixth inning, with the game scoreless. The Yankees took the lead in the sixth when left fielder Lucas Duda came up short on a diving attempt at Gardners opposite-field liner. The ball scooted past Duda and Gardner raced into third base with a triple. Jayson Nix followed with a single that dropped just in front of charging right fielder Mike Baxter for a 1-0 lead. Gardner got off to a tough start Monday in the oddly angled centre field. He took his eye off Wrights drive to check for the section of the wall in front of the Mets bullpen that is a chain link fence, and it went for a first-inning triple. There was no looking back the next time. With Niese on first after his second single of the night, Murphy sent a fly that Gardner tracked to the wall. He jumped in front of the 385-foot marker and caught the ball above the fence. "I didnt think it was hit as good as it showed," Gardner said. "I didnt realize it was going out." Niese got Gardner to ground out with runners on second and third to end a threat in the seventh. Wright fell behind 0-2 leading off the seventh before hitting a full-count pitch into the left-centre stands for his seventh homer. "One of the big things is what David was able to do because the air couldve been taken out of us," Murphy said of Wrights homer coming an inning after Murphy lost his to Gardners catch. Baxter doubled with one out in the eighth, pinch-hitter Jordany Valdespin walked and they moved up on Chris Stewarts passed ball. With the infield playing in, Ruben Tejada hit a grounder to second baseman Robinson Cano, who snapped a throw home. Stewart made a sweep tag on Baxters back as he tried to reach his hand out to touch the plate. With two outs, Murphy followed with a single. "I did a terrible job. I didnt have command of anything," Robertson said. "I kept getting behind in the count, I couldnt throw any first pitch strikes. It was really tough, frustrating." Niese allowed eight hits and one run in seven innings. Hughes pitched seven, too, yielding one run and four hits in seven. He struck out six and walked none. NOTES: Wright has two homers against Hughes in 12 at-bats. ... Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain (right oblique strain) said he should be activated from the DL on Tuesday. ... Yankees LHP Francisco Rondon, designated for assignment on Friday, has been sent outright to Double-A Trenton. ... The Mets will honour Yankees closer Mariano Rivera before Tuesdays game. ... RIO DE JANEIRO -- Before they took the court and won bronze, they gathered in the locker room one final time. Each player on the U.S. womens volleyball took a turn to speak.Jordan Larson told her teammates she loved them and would fight for every one of them.Alisha Glass made sure they all knew there was nowhere shed rather be now than right here in Rio.Captain Christa Dietzen? She didnt need an Olympic medal. She already understood what this tight-knit team was all about, and she also knew it sure would be nice to wear one home as she heads into retirement and prepares to start a family. They thanked one another for the time and effort over four hard years.Beach star Kerri Walsh Jennings sent a note of her own: Go get a bronze. Just as Walsh Jennings and April Ross did.Im just really proud to be a part of this program, Larson said. Its come a long way. Im just really happy because there are a lot of good people who deserve this. A lot of people just gave their hearts and soul to this.Player-turned-coach Karch Kiraly, the only person to win Olympic volleyball gold as a beach and indoor player, addressed each woman. He spoke of his admiration and acknowledged those players back home who didnt make the cut.Just by stepping on the court Saturday, Foluke Akinradewo showed how this squad stuck together. She returned from an injury to her left leg that forced her out early in the semifinal loss to Serbia. The star middle blocker took charge as the top-ranked Americans bounced back two days later to beat the Netherlands 25-23, 25-27, 25-22, 25-19.After Kim Hills ace on match point, the U.S. women fell into an embrace. Kiraly hugged his coaches and brought the women into a huddle for one last cheer. In a way, selfishly, I wanted a gold medal to almost prove the way this culture is, or the way the culture has grown and the foundation that weve built, almost to prove it right -- that the way we did it was right, Dietzen said. A medals not going to prove that. A medal doesnt define this team. It will never define this team.Reserve setter Courrtney Thompson, the Americans inspirational motivator, joined Dietzen in announcing immediately after the match that her volleyball days are done.dddddddddddd Then they joked about meeting for a crack-of-dawn spin class later in the week.I have a whole new respect for everyone that wins a bronze medal, Thompson said. Its not easy, 48 hours later. This group leaves the Olympics again without the big prize. The last three games went this way: Beijing 2008, silver; London 2012, silver; and Rio de Janeiro 2016, bronze. Our team dealt with some real pain and heartache, heartbreak, a couple of days ago, said Kiraly, who thanked Walsh Jennings for her gesture. Im incredibly proud of how within hours they were preparing, carrying that heartbreak, but preparing to be good and to finish strong. I also never had any understanding of how good a bronze medal could feel, and it feels incredible right now. Were so happy to finish this tournament on this note. The Netherlands shined, playing in its first Olympics since the 1996 Atlanta Games. The Dutch pushed the U.S. to five sets in pool play on Aug. 8 and put womens volleyball on the map at home with a gutsy, never-give-up style. Now, the Americans are left to try again in Tokyo 2020 for the programs first gold, with certain new leaders emerging to guide that run: Hill, Kelsey Robinson, Kayla Banwarth.Thompson and Carli Lloyd wrapped themselves together with an American flag. Banwarth lifted the Stars and Stripes above her head. These women will look to build on this even if it wasnt the result they planned for all along. Still, it was far better than departing South America empty-handed.Theres been a lot of tears the past couple days, Hill said. And not just tears of sadness before this match, tears of gratitude and just joy at this experience these past four years, in this tournament and being with this group of people, this special group. Its been such an amazing ride.
