TORONTO -- As David Clarkson spent his first day on Toronto ice alongside his idol Wendel Clark, the comparisons between the Maple Leafs newest winger and their past star had already started. Clarkson hopes his tenure in Toronto earns him that kind of stature, but Clark already sees the 29-year-old as a better player. "I havent got that talent," Clark said Thursday after he and Clarkson worked with some kids at the teams hockey school. "He brings all parts of the game. Its not a one-dimensional game. Whatever game you want to play, thats how hell play it. If its going to be a physical night, hes there. If its part of putting the puck in the net, hes there. If it gets even rougher on a different night ... Dave can play every part of the game, no matter which way the game goes." Clarkson, who signed a seven-year, US$36.75-million deal with the Leafs last week, has plenty of work to do to live up to that contract. That includes scoring and being the kind of grinding, physical force he was with the New Jersey Devils. But Clark, who knows a thing or two about pressure after being the top pick in the 1985 draft, thinks its unfair to count on everything from Clarkson, who has just one 30-goal season. "Dave will come out and play his style, especially at home," Clark said. "I think his style suits that coming in here because this isnt really a road building for a lot of teams with 10 hometown boys usually on every other team. Its good. It reminds me a little bit of the old days ... its going to be a long night when youre playing against him." Clark had a similar impact during parts of 12 seasons with the Leafs as he battled injuries and tried to balance physicality and offence. Growing up in the Toronto area, Clarkson has a couple of specific memories about his idol. "I think it had to do with either going down the wing with a big shot and scoring, or a fight," he said. "I love that style of play or sticking up for a teammate. Those are the kinds of things that I enjoyed watching when I was young." So its no surprise that Clarkson, when he grew into his six-foot-one, 200-pound frame, tried to do the same at the NHL level. Clark didnt even mind the "Wendel Clark-son" nickname. "Its all good," Clark said. "Any time you can bring energy to the team, its not just about scoring and everything. It takes all types of players, so when you can bring different personalities in and lead-by-example guys and bring energy to the building, thats the fun part." The Clark-Clarkson comparisons will only go so far, though. Clarkson hasnt decided what jersey number hell wear next season, but he ruled out No. 17. "Couldnt do that. I couldnt live up to what he had done," he said. "To me, it was a childhood thing. But no, thats not in the equation." Ted Williams Jersey .C. -- Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Rick Porcello Jersey . Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee? Green had bounced around the NBA when he wasnt playing overseas. The Pacers gave up on Plumlee after just one season. Now Green and Plumlee are key cogs in the Suns surprising breakout season. . A forerunning sled crashed into the worker Thursday at the Sanki Sliding Center. The unidentified worker broke both legs and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. Xander Bogaerts Jersey . "It was nerve-wracking, but we pulled through," said Collaros, who threw four touchdown passes to lead the Toronto Argonauts (8-4) to a 33-27 win over the Calgary Stampeders (9-3) in front of 28,781 fans at McMahon Stadium. Jackie Bradley Jr Jersey . With the short-handed Warriors needing help from someone -- anyone -- to stop a three-game skid, ONeal returned from right knee and groin injuries that had sidelined him for four games and put up season highs with 18 points and eight rebounds. It was just enough to help lift Golden State to a 102-101 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday night. STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- With injuries impacting their lineup early, freshmen have had to play big minutes in Penn States new fast-paced offense. They havent disappointed and on Tuesday, the Nittany Lions promising freshman class got help from a handful of veterans to pull away from Grand Canyon 85-76.Rookie Lamar Stevens scored 19 points and top returning scorers Payton Banks (15) and Shep Garner (14) chipped in to lead the Nittany Lions in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament.I think weve made a lot of good strides over the last three games, Banks said. Along with Stevens, freshman Tony Carr also had his third-straight double-digit game with 10 points. This is the type of scoring potential Penn State coach Pat Chambers envisioned when he pledged to meld young and old and chase 80-plus points per game in the preseason. To get there, the Nittany Lions (2-1) needed to overcome a 0-for-9 shooting slump in the first five minutes of the second half that saw them squander a 48-41 halftime lead.I found out a lot about my team, Chambers said. They dug deep, they got back to the middle of the ring, they punched back and we took the lead.Joshua Braun made 5 of 10 3-pointers and led Grand Canyon (0-2) with 25 points. Oscar Frayer, Darion Clark, Keonta Vernon and Shaq Carr also finished in double figures for the Antelopes with 13, 12, 11 and 10 points, respectively.Braun hit 2 of 3 free throws with 15:29 left to give Grand Canyon a 50-48 lead -- its last of the game. The Nittany Lions put together an impressive 13-7 run immediately thereafter in which Banks and Stevens combiined for all 13 points.ddddddddddddStevens tipped in a rebound with 6:06 left to put Penn State up 75-63 for its biggest lead.We knew it was going to be tough game, Grand Canyon coach Dan Majerle said. Were shorthanded, DeWayne Russell is our starting point guard, he wasnt able to play the first two games, well get him back.BUSY SCHEDULEPenn State played its third game in five days and its schedule remains hectic for the near future. The Nittany Lions will cap the tournament with back-to-back games this weekend and will play five times in the final 11 days of the month.MORE FROM MOOREJulian Moore led Penn State with nine rebounds and had the type of game Chambers hoped he would have earlier. But foul trouble in the first two games limited Moores minutes. He played 20 against the Antelopes.HURT LIONSGuard Josh Reaves missed his third game with a lower leg injury and hes not expected to play this weekend.
