RIO DE JANEIRO -- A male weightlifter from Kyrgyzstan became the first athlete at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics to be stripped of a medal after a positive drug test.Izzat Artykov tested positive for strychnine after winning the bronze medal in the 69-kilogram division, the Court of Arbitration for Sports anti-doping division said Thursday. The 22-year-old lifters medal was taken away and he was kicked out of the Games.Later Thursday, the International Canoe Federation said canoe sprint bronze medalist Serghei Tarnovschi of Moldova has been suspended after failing a pre-competition doping test. The 19-year-old Tarnovschi placed third in the 1,000 meters canoe single final Tuesday and was due to compete in the 1,000 meters double on Friday with his older brother Oleg. The ICF said he would now no longer be eligible and will face provisional suspension under anti-doping rules.Strychnine is a defined as a stimulant in the World Anti-Doping Agencys list of banned substances. It is a highly toxic drug often used as a pesticide, particularly for killing rodents. However, it also has a long history in sports doping, used in small doses to tighten tired muscles. Strychnine was reportedly commonly used in the early years of the Tour de France to help cyclists survive the demanding rides.CAS referred the case to the international weightlifting federation for possible further sanctions against Artykov, who could face a two-year ban from the sport. The federation and the IOC were asked to decide on the reallocation of the medal.Luis Javier Mosquera of Colombia is in line to be upgraded from fourth place to the bronze medal. Chinas Zhiyong Shi won the gold, and Turkeys Daniyar Ismayilov took the silver. Also Thursday, Brazilian road cyclist Kleber Ramos was disqualified from the Olympics after testing positive for the blood-booster EPO in a pre-games test on July 31. He had accepted a provisional suspension on a voluntary basis and did not request a hearing. He?competed in the mens Olympic road race on Aug. 6 but failed to finish.Ramos case was referred to the international cycling body, which could impose a two-year ban. That brings the total count of athletes sanctioned for doping at the Rio Games to five.Last week, Polish weightlifter Tomasz Zielinksi and Bulgarian steeplechaser Silvia Danekova were kicked out of the Games after testing positive for banned substances, while Chinese swimmer Chen Xinyi accepted a provisional suspension after testing positive for a diuretic. The 18-year-old Chen had her fourth-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly?annulled, and?FINA was asked to consider any further sanctions.Several other positive tests are in the process of being heard by CAS, which is handling doping cases at the Olympics for the first time. "Two things Ive always known about our team is that its never easy and that we never quit," OKC coach Scott Brooks said on Tuesday. "I expect that same effort that weve had all four games to be the same tomorrow night. We did a lot of good things last night. We just didnt finish the game. Every game has come down to the last two or three minutes. Hopefully we can do a better job of closing out the game." The Thunder made it to the NBA Finals last season before losing to the Miami Heat. They earned the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs, but lost All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook in Game 2 of their first-round series against the Houston Rockets. OKC and Memphis battled in Game 4 with no team having larger than a five-point lead in the fourth quarter. Kevin Durant tied the game with a finger roll with less than seven seconds on the clock. The game went to overtime and thats when the Grizzlies dominated. They took the extra session by a 9-3 margin to claim a 103-97 victory. The win provided some sense of revenge for Memphis, which fell down 17 points on Monday. Two years ago, armed with a 2-1 series lead, the Grizzlies blew an 18-point lead in Game 4 and fell to the Thunder. "We were able to overcome a lot," Grizzlies head coach Lionel Hollins said.dddddddddddd "We just kept battling through and got a win." Now, the Grizzlies are in position to make the Western Conference Finals for the first time in franchise history. "We are a team that plays hard and doesnt quit," said Hollins. "Were not the most-talented team in the playoffs. We try to do whatever we can to get a win." Mike Conley scored a team-high 24 points while Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol chipped in 23 apiece to go with 12 and 11 rebounds, respectively, for Memphis. Conley and Gasol, the Defensive Player of the Year, both made the All- Defensive Second Team on Monday. Durant led the Thunder with 27 points, but went 0-for-5 from the field in overtime. He had seven boards and seven assists. Kevin Martin added 17 off the bench, followed by a double-double from Serge Ibaka, who had 17 points and 14 rebounds. Reggie Jackson and Nick Collison both cracked the 10-point mark as well. The Thunder are down, but have two possible home games left. Not that they are looking that far in advance, but OKC is far from out of it, at least in its mind. "Were going to keep fighting," Brooks said. "Were going to keep competing. All were worried about is winning one game. Its a great place to play. The energy in our crowd hopefully can get us over that hump. We know that all were focused on is if we win one game." Memphis won Game 2 in Oklahoma City and captured one regular-season meeting there as well. If OKC wins on Wednesday, Game 6 is slated for Friday in Memphis.
