CONCACAF Champions League win, the Montreal Impact hope to carry that momentum into an important Major League Soccer matchup in Antworten

MONTREAL -- Fresh from a big CONCACAF Champions League win, the Montreal Impact hope to carry that momentum into an important Major League Soccer matchup in Chicago. Newcomer Hernan Bernardello was strong in his Impact debut as Montreal beat the San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 on Wednesday night at Saputo Stadium in their first Champions League game in five years. The Impact, however, have just one win in their last seven MLS games, including a 3-1 loss in Washington, D.C., last Saturday. Now that Montreal is on the right track in the tournaments group stage, midfielder Patrice Bernier hopes that solid effort will continue against the Fire on Saturday night. "Its a boost for the teams morale and confidence," Bernier said. "It was a solid game and we needed to get back to basics and now we have that good base to attack the MLS every game. All of the games count all the time but now that the standings are so tight we know that we have to get our points." Those points have been hard to come by lately for the Impact. Montreal has six points in its last seven games (1-3-3), three of those coming in a 1-0 win over Sporting Kansas City on July 27 when substitute Blake Smith scored in stoppage time. The skid has dropped the Impact out of the Eastern Conference lead to third place, with a 10-6-5 mark and 35 points in 21 games. Montreal trails first-place New York by three points and second-place Kansas City by one, but the Impact hold two games in hand on both teams. "Were going to Chicago, a team thats playing well and they have the offensive abilities that make the difference so were heading there with clear heads and ready to attack and come out of there with as many points as possible," Bernier said. The Fire, who have also played 21 games, have climbed to seventh in the East after struggling to a 2-7-1 start that included a 2-0 loss in Montreal on Apr. 27. In contrast to the Impact, Chicago enters riding a hot streak in MLS play but is coming off a disappointing loss Wednesday night. The Fire were eliminated from the U.S. Open Cup following a 2-0 semifinal loss to D.C. United at Toyota Park. "I think at this point theyre a different team, were a different team," Fire assistant coach Mike Matkovich said. "Theyre in the same boat as us so its just going to be a matter of digging down deep and getting through this game and weve got to find a way to get points. Chicagos season turned around after they acquired Mike Magee from Los Angeles on May 24. "Theyve started slow this year but theyre a talented team," said Impact forward Justin Mapp, who played for the Fire from 2003-10. "I know some of their players and the addition of Mike Magee certainly helped them and theyve kind of caught their stride. Theyve had a number of good results in the last number of games. Its a tough place to play." Magee, who leads the MLS with 14 goals, came to Chicago in the trade that sent the rights to Robbie Rogers to the Galaxy. Rogers became the first openly gay man to play for a top-level North American pro sports team when he made his L.A. debut on May 27. While that milestone made headlines, the Fires acquisition of Magee paid immediate dividends. He has scored eight goals in 10 league games with Chicago, including each one in each of his last three games. The Fire are undefeated over that stretch with two wins and a draw, including a 2-1 win in Philadelphia. Chicago is coming off the U.S. Open Cup loss though, and midfielder Logan Pause is not putting a lot of stock into the Impacts recent MLS struggles. "Theyre a dangerous team," Pause said. "They won the Canadian championship and theyre playing in CONCACAF. Theyre a good team from Di Vaio all the way down. "Theyve got a lot of experience, a lot of seasoned veterans and were looking to pay them back after a tough result we faced in Montreal earlier in the year. And of course theyre a conference opponent that were trying to catch in the table." Etoo gave Jose Mourinhos team a decisive lead from Oscars back pass in the 34th.By the end of the NFL Combine in Indianapolis this week, there’s one thing for certain: The US media will be telling us about the player who “wowed us at the Combine” while others “disappointed” or “hurt their draft status”. A total of 332 prospects from college football are invited to do different drills, watched on by GMs, owners, head coaches, scouts and every member of the American football media known to man.The drills are: The 40-yard dash (timed run measuring speed), the shuttle run (a cone drill to measure lateral quickness), the three-cone drill (to measure a players ability to change directions at speed), the bench press (to test strength), the broad jump (getting a player to stand still and jump outwards before landing without moving, to test a players balance) and the vertical jump (measuring his explosiveness). The 40-yard dash is seen as being all-important, simply because its more like an Olympic event than the rest of them. It is not unusual to see remarkable feats of athleticism If you have a great Combine - as Trae Waynes did in 2015 - then its probable that youll move yourself in leaps and bounds up the draft order. Thats not guaranteed - Jacoby Ford had a brisk 4.28-second 40-yard dash in 2010 and is now playing in the Canadian Football League after four years of not fitting in anywhere. And a great Combine can lead to a great NFL career - heres looking at you, Odell Beckham Jr (great shuttle sprints in 2014), Chris Johnson (record breaker for the 2008 40-yard dash) and Tyler Eifert (led all tight ends in 2011).But when we look at 2010, here are two player profiles from the Combine that still make us chuckle. Prospects will find themselves pitted against each other in the hunt for NFL recognition The first talked about an Arizona tight end who produced 23 reps in the bench press: Does not have a great top-end speed and may not be able to stretch the field at the next level. Lacks the elusiveness to make people miss after catch. That was about Rob Gronkowski. The other was about a wide receiver from a small school who recorded OK-to-mediocre numbers in every comparison apart from the broad jump (where he was worst) and in the vertical jump (where he was almost worst). The NFL Combine expert said in his profile: He is undersized and will initially struggle with the physical aspects of the game at the next level, adding: He has decent hands but it looks like the ball gets big on him at times and he traps too many passes in his body.It finished with: Lacks size. Not tall and does not possess enough bulk at this time. Needs to add strength to more effectively beat press coverage and battled for the ball in the air. Route running skills could use some refinement. Needs to become more consistent catching the ball in a crowd. That was about Central Michigans Antonio Brown. Hes worked out OK for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Not tall and does not possess enough bulk at this time. Needs to add strength to more effectively beat press coverage and battled for the ball in the air. Route running skills could use some refinement. NFL Combinne verdict on Antonio Brown The vertical jump tests the explosion and power in a players legs And the overrated? This 2011 Florida State alumnus topped players in the vertical jump and 20-yard shuttle and his profile described his strengths as: Very tight and sound in his drop.dddddddddddd Accelerates quickly when escaping the pocket. Will make plays in the open field after tucking. Can buy time with his feet and keep his eyes downfield. Does a good job in the short passing game getting the ball out quickly with accuracy. Exhibits great leadership qualities and toughness. Does not have a great top-end speed and may not be able to stretch the field at the next level. Lacks the elusiveness to make people miss after catch. NFL Combine verdict on Rob Gronkowski Prospects must demonstrate strength, speed and power Thats Christian Ponder, who hasnt played since 2014 and is considered one of the biggest quarterback draft busts in recent memory. And there are those who they get just right: He will be challenged to avoid a Ryan Leaf-like, crash-and-burn scenario if he does not settle down and mature. Who was that about? Johnny Manziel. Nuff said. But the best stories are the ones about the uninvited, who sit outside and look into the party, wishing for the chance. If that happens: You have to do what you have to do to get there, no matter what it takes. That was New Englands Malcolm Butler, talking to USA Today in 2015 a few days after his incredible play won Super Bowl 49. Also playing for the Patriots is one Julian Edelman, who has also turned out OK too. He will be challenged to avoid a Ryan Leaf-like, crash-and-burn scenario if he does not settle down and mature. NFL Combine verdict on Johnny Manziel Spare a thought for the gentleman on the left... In Butlers words: The Combine is a good thing - its a great thing. Everyone wants to go and show their abilities to the scouts and the whole world, but not everyone is going to have that opportunity. And even if you dont get invited, you can still get a job in the NFL. Just ask Butler, Edelman and fellow non-invitees Doug Baldwin, Sam Shields, Wes Welker and future NFL Hall of Famer James Harrison.
