Dwight Howard could leave, Chris Paul is expected to stay, and plenty more will happen beyond Los Angeles when the NBAs free agency period opens. Frontcourt players such as Josh Smith, David West, Andrew Bynum and Al Jefferson also can become free agents Monday at midnight EDT. Howard heads the class after spending one largely unhappy season with the Lakers. They would like him back and can outspend other suitors by about $30 million, according to NBA rules, but teams such as Houston, Dallas and Atlanta will try to persuade him to take less money for more enjoyment. He didnt fit right in Mike DAntonis offence and could end up with his third home in less than a year, having been dealt from Orlando to Los Angeles just last August. Bynum was in that deal, too, going from the Lakers to Philadelphia in what was a four-team trade. He sat out all season because of knee problems and could leave without ever playing a game for the 76ers. The Clippers are much happier with Paul, and he has plenty of reasons to stay in Los Angeles. The Clippers won their first Pacific Division title last season and will be coached now by Doc Rivers, who headed across the country after the Clippers sent a future first-round draft pick to Boston to let him out of his contract. Players can agree to deals any time after free agency opens but cant sign until July 10, after next seasons salary cap has been set. Thats when the blockbuster draft night trade that sent Kevin Garnett from Boston to Brooklyn will become official. The more severe penalties in the 2011 Collective Bargaining Agreement now start to take effect, with stiffer luxury taxes and more restrictions on sign-and-trades. Teams are chasing the two-time defending champion Miami Heat, who will try to hold onto key reserve Chris Andersen. The San Antonio Spurs, whom they beat in seven games in the NBA Finals, would see the end of their longtime Big Three if Manu Ginobili does not re-sign. Starter Tiago Splitter is a restricted free agent, so the Spurs can match an offer. West helped Indiana take Miami to seven games in the Eastern Conference finals, and the Pacers would like to keep the veteran power forward. The versatile Smith (Atlanta) and the rugged Jefferson (Utah) also are available. Key guards on the market include Olympian Andre Iguodala of Denver and Sixth Man of the Year J.R. Smith of New York. Nick Liles drove home the winning run in the 12th inning as the Goldeyes evened up their series with a 3-2 win over the Sioux City Explorers. “Neither team was really hitting the ball at all,” said Goldeyes pitching coach Jamie Vermilyea. “Our pitchers kept us in the game. We finally scratched one off on a good pitcher and got the W.” Sioux City started the scoring in the third inning. They scored twice on a Bryan Pounds double with two outs to take the early lead. The Goldeyes would respond in the top half of the fourth. Josh Mazzola and Casey Haerther, who both came into the game struggling at the plate, hit back-to-back run scoring doubles to knot the game at 2-2. The Goldeyes would come close to breaking the tie in the eighth inning. Winnipeg put two runners in scoring position with two outs, but Explorers reliever Jimmer Kennedy got Mazzola to strike out swinging to end the threat. Neither team could break the deadllock through nine, sending the game into extra innings.dddddddddddd.The bullpens continued to hush the bats before the Goldeyes came through in the 12th. Amos Ramon reached on an error to Pounds and with two outs and on a 0-2 count, Liles drove him in for the game winning run. Patrick Keating worked his longest outing of the season to improve to 4-0. He pitched 3 1/3 innings of relief, while striking out five. He did not allow an Explorer to reach base. Matt Rusch had an impressive start for Winnipeg, going seven strong innings before turning it over to the bullpen. Cody Satterwhite factored in the decision for the second straight night, this time on the losing side of things. He pitched two innings and allowed only the one hit to Liles, which brought home the game winning, unearned run in the 12th. The Goldeyes will look to take the series tomorrow night at Lewis & Clark Park. Winnipeg will send lefthander Pete Gehle to the mound for a 7:00 p.m. start.
