SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Quarterback DeShone Kizer says Notre Dame players are remembering the pain they felt two years when they were embarrassed in a 49-14 loss to rival Southern California as the Fighting Irish prepare to finish a scuffling season on the road against the 12th-ranked Trojans.Coach, I remember, challenged us after that game to remember that feeling and every time we play against USC to try to bring that and allow that to fuel us, Kizer said. That feeling is still there. It fueled me last year and it will fuel me this year. The game against the Trojans (8-3), who have won seven straight after a 1/3 start, could be Kizers last with Notre Dame (4-7). He is being projected by many to be a first-round draft pick in the NFL, with some saying he could be a top-five pick. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound junior, who has two years of eligibility left, wasnt in reflective mood Tuesday when talking to reporters, declining to speculate about his future. But after a 34-31 loss to Virginia Tech on Saturday that ensured Notre Dames first losing season since Brian Kelly became coach in 2010, Kizer spent time on the field after the game with his parents and outgoing seniors taking in the scene with their families. Kizer, who completed just 3 of 15 passes for 36 yards in the second half against the Hokies, said he had done the same thing last year as well.I think its awesome to soak in the moment, Kizer said. That was our last game (at home) for the 2016 team and I think that it was an awesome opportunity to take it all in with my family. The ups and downs.Kizer has said he will make his decision after talking with his family when the season ends on Saturday. He talked two weeks ago about competing with Malik Zaire, whom he beat out this year for the starters job, and sophomore Brandon Wimbush, who redshirted this season, to be the starter next season, although many expect Zaire to switch to another school for his final year of eligibility after graduating from Notre Dame.Kizer was frank when talking to reporters after the loss to Virginia Tech about this seasons disappointments, with all seven losses being by eight points or less, three of those after leading by 10 points or more.I think that I did a good job of avoiding all your guys questions through all the other losses and at this point, what else am I supposed to say? he said. Its just unfortunate this is how the season has gone. I do believe that in every game we played, we had an opportunity to win. We beat ourselves, in a sense, from stupid penalties, stupid decisions on reads. I think that, once again, every opportunity that we have been out there, we have had a chance to win the game and for us to come up short by an average of something around five points on all those games, is very frustrating.Kizer said the announcement Tuesday by the NCAA that it was ordering Notre Dame to vacate 21 wins from the 2012 and 2013 seasons, which the school said it will appeal, will have no effect on the team as they prepare to play the Trojans. All we have in front of us is USC. Whatever comes from the past is not going to affect how we go about beating USC, he said.Kizer heads into the game against the Trojans with a 12-10 record as a starter after winning eight of his first nine starts. He burst on the scene when he rallied the Irish to a come-from-behind win over Virginia when he threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Will Fuller with 12 seconds left after Zaire sustained a broken ankle. He describes this year as a learning season. Its easy to lead on top. Its difficult to lead when youre not on top, Kizer said. I think that as a quarterback who has seen both sides of this in two seasons here that personally I have tried my hardest to maintain who I am and the identity that I have as a leader, and its been tested on both sides.I think that moving forward I have to focus on maintaining that same style of leadership, being the same guy every day, and doing whatever it takes to lead an offense to a successful game and get as many wins as we can, he said.Whether that will be with the Irish or an NFL team remains to be seen.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25. BALTIMORE -- Held in check by Baltimores pitchers for 18 consecutive innings, the Boston Red Sox finally played like the highest-scoring team in the major leagues. Mike Carp and Jonny Gomes homered to back an effective pitching performance by John Lackey, and Boston beat the Orioles 5-4 Saturday to end a five-game losing streak in Baltimore. After dropping the first two games of the series, the Red Sox fell into an early 2-0 hole before bouncing back. Carps home run snapped an 18-inning scoring drought in the fourth, and Gomes made it 5-2 in the sixth with a solo shot that chased Baltimore starter Freddy Garcia (3-4). Every starter except for Jarrod Saltalamacchia got at least one hit, including two by Gomes. Boston finished with nine hits, four for extra bases. "Us getting shut outs not going to last too long," Gomes said. "Weve got some pretty good hitters on this team." Including Carp, whos been pressed into action at first base since Mike Napoli fell ill in the third inning of Thursday nights game. Napoli was sent back to Boston on Saturday so team doctors can determine why hes been feeling groggy over the past few days. Carp insisted that the Red Sox didnt come into the game pressing to break out of their offensive funk. "We dont think about that," he said. "We feel like were going to mash every day. It just takes one guy to get going, fortunately today it was me. Tomorrow its going to be another guy and so on and so forth." The victory increased Bostons lead over second-place Baltimore in the AL East to 2 1/2 games. The Red Sox lost three games at Camden Yards last September and were 0-2 this season, their longest dry spell in Baltimore since a seven-game stretch in 1969-70. Lackey (4-5) gave up two runs, seven hits and a walk in seven innings to improve to 12-4 lifetime against the Orioles. It was the right-handers first win since May 25, even though hes allowed three runs or fewer in nine of his 11 starts this season. Former Oriole Koji Uehara struck out the side in the eighth and Andrew Bailey gave up a two-run homer to Matt Wieters in the ninth before securing his eighth save. The game ended when pinch-runner Alexi Casilla took off from first base on a one-out liner to right by Ryan Flaherty. Shane Victorino made the catch without much difficulty and threw out Casilla for the double play. "Flaherty hit that ball very good," Casilla said. "He crushed it over my head. I kind of started running and looked where Victorino was playing and thought no chance he was going to catch that ball..dddddddddddd I guess I kept running. Bad read." Baltimores Manny Machado extended his career-high hitting streak to 13 games and hit his major league leading 31st double. Despite the loss, Baltimore has won 13 of its last 18 games against the Red Sox. The Orioles took a 2-0 lead before Lackey got an out. After Nate McLouth singled off the pitchers foot and scored on a double by Machado, Nick Markakis singled and Adam Jones drove in a run with an infield hit. Lackey avoided further damage by retiring Wieters and J.J. Hardy with runners at second and third. "It might have been the key to the game," Boston manager John Farrell said. Lackey said, "Cant really do much about the first couple guys getting on once theyre on, so you just try to minimize it the best you can." David Ortiz led off the Boston second inning with a liner to centre that bounced off the wall and eluded Jones. The husky man known as "Big Papi" legged it out for his second triple this month; the last time Ortiz had two triples in a season was 2006. With Ortiz on third, Carp drew a walk before Garcia got three straight outs. The Red Sox ended their season-high scoring drought with a three-run fourth. After Dustin Pedroia singled and Carp homered to tie it, Gomes singled and Stephen Drew ended a 4-for-31 skid with an RBI double. Pedroias single came after home plate umpire Jeff Nelson ruled he fouled off a third strike. In reality, Pedroia missed it. "It was a break for us," Pedroia said. "I just said I thought I fouled that. Then he said, Foul ball. I thought I hit something. It was probably the ground. I dont know." Boston made it 4-2 in the fifth. Jacoby Ellsbury led off with a single, his first hit in 12 at-bats during this series. He stole second, advanced on a bunt and scored on Pedroias grounder to shortstop. Baltimore put runners at the corners with no outs in the bottom half, but Lackey worked out of the jam.
