NEW YORK -- The WNBA playoffs are ready to start with their own version of March Madness. Well sort of.The league changed the playoff format this season, adopting single-elimination games in the first two rounds before going to a best-of-five series in the semifinals.Im excited for it, said Los Angeles Sparks coach Brian Agler. No one knows yet how it will work out, but it should be exciting. The Sparks and Minnesota Lynx have byes until the semifinals after posting the top two records in the leagues 20th season. Minnesota will try to become the WNBAs first repeat champion since Los Angeles did it in 2001-02. Thats the last time the Sparks won a title, a skid they hope to end this season. Here are a few things to look for when the postseason begins Wednesday with the Atlanta Dream hosting the Seattle Storm and the Indiana Fever taking on the Phoenix Mercury:INJURY STATUS: Elena Delle Donne is sidelined after having surgery on her right thumb last week. The Sky have found ways to win without their star, clinching the No. 4 seed and a first-round bye. It might be difficult for Chicago to make a deep run without the 2015 WNBA MVP. ... New York has been beset by injuries toward the end of the season. Tanisha Wright (knee) played a few games before the regular season ended. Kiah Stokes hasnt played since Aug. 26 because of a hip injury. Shoni Schimmel also has been out with a concussion. The Liberty need to be healthy to have a chance to make it to the Finals.SUSPENDED: TThe WNBA handed out a one-game suspension to Atlantas Tiffany Hayes for accruing her seventh technical foul in the Dreams regular season finale on Sunday.dddddddddddd Under league rules, a player is automatically suspended one game when that number of technical is reached. The count is reset for the playoffs with a player receiving a suspension for a fourth technical in the playoffs.CURTAIN CALL: The stellar careers of Swin Cash , Tamika Catchings and Penny Taylor will end at some point over the next month. All three hope it will come after winning another WNBA Championship. Catchings and Taylor will square off on Wednesday when the Indiana Fever host the Phoenix Mercury in the opening round.Catchings won her lone title in 2012 while Cash won in 2003, 2006 and 2010. Taylor helped the Mercury to championships in 2007, 2009 and 2014.POSTSEASON SUCCESS: Breanna Stewart only lost one game in the postseason in college and that came in the Big East tournament her freshman year. She was a perfect 24 for 24 in the NCAA Tournament to lead UConn to four consecutive national championships. She hopes to continue that in the pros.I like the format, Stewart said after the Storms last trip to New York. Every game for us lately has felt like a playoff game because we needed to win to get in.---Follow Doug on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/dougfeinberg ' ' '

BOSTON -- There were reminders of David Ortiz everywhere Friday night at Fenway Park. Printed banners atop the Green Monster and alongside the perimeter of the building. Countless homemade signs. The first of three pregame ceremonies planned for the weekend. And a massive artistic rendering of Ortiz weaved into the center-field grass. It was impossible not to know that Ortiz was the central figure in this, the last regular-season series of his career. But just in case, Ortiz gave the rain-drenched throng in Boston another reason to appreciate him.In a rather fitting result for the beginning of an Ortiz-centric weekend, his two-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the difference in a 5-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. The retiring designated hitter also had an RBI single as Boston stopped a three-game slide and remained on pace to open the American League Division Series at home against Cleveland next Thursday. What can I tell you? Pretty good season, Ortiz said matter-of-factly in a quick session with reporters after the game.As Ortiz took the heroics in stride, his teammates were asked once again to put his phenomenal last season into perspective.Ive seen it for 10 years; its pretty special, man, second baseman Dustin Pedroia said. Every time theres a big situation, hes found a way to come through. Were going to enjoy the last couple of games we have with him because its pretty special. ... You expect it. Its kind of sad to say, in this game its tough to do what hes doing and he makes it look easy. You appreciate it so much from the outside watching it. Were just enjoying it. Its pretty awesome to see.Ortizs 541st home run was also his 1,192nd career extra-base hit, which tied him with Ken Griffey Jr. and Rafael Palmeiro for eighth place on baseballs all-time list. In addition, he is now tied with Torontos Edwin Encarnacion for the AL lead with 127 RBIs.All this for a 40-year-old who apparently needs hours of assistance to get ready for each and every game.Nights like tonight. He almost leaves you speechless, manager John Farrell said. The career hes had, the number of home runs hes hit from the seventh inning on in ballgames at big moments. Tonight is right there with them. The blast helped the Sox hold on to the second seed in the upcoming AL playoffs with two games to play, giving them the inside track for home-field advantage against Cleveland in the ALDS. A fourth straight loss would have put the Indians ahead and Boston on a path toward opening the postseason on the road, this just four days after the Red Sox held the top record in the AL.They needed a boost, and Ortizs timing was impeccable, as summed up by teammate Jackie Bradley Jr.:Big-time player, big-time playmaker, big-time home run. Nick Ritchie Jersey . Newcastle dominated in the early stages but City weathered the storm and then raised its game in extra time. FARGO, N.D. -- North Dakota State rolled to its fifth straight Football Championship Subdivision title last year and then watched its star quarterback walk to the stage as the No. 2 overall pick in the NFL draft. Yet there was still something missing for Bison fans. They didnt get a chance to play a Football Bowl Subdivision team. The years we dont play an FBS school, there is some disappointment there, North Dakota State athletic director Matt Larsen said. Our fans want to see how we stack up.The Bison certainly have no need to raise their profile with an unprecedented title run and two appearances on ESPNs College GameDay, which is normally reserved for FBS schools. Yet they are constantly putting out feelers to FBS teams and recently announced games at Oregon in 2020 and Colorado in 2024.So why do it? Contrary to popular belief, Larsen said, its not all about cashing in.There is both a philosophical and financial piece to it, Larsen said, noting that FBS games typically fetch a paycheck between $300,000 and $600,000. For an FCS program, that is a nice chunk of change to help support the operating budget. Philosophically, its something that resonates with our fans.Bison fan Bob Clark, who has attended 418 straight North Dakota State football games, said he and fellow supporters enjoy the atmosphere of the FBS games compared to sitting in half-full stadiums at other schools.I wish we could play an FBS team every year, Clark said. We used to travel to Morningside and sit in front of 400 people watching a game. Now were in a 65,000-seat stadium at Kansas State and a 70,000-seat stadium at Iowa. Its a different feeling.Last years hiatus broke a five-year streak of FBS matchups for the Bison, who in that span defeated Kansas, Minnesota, Colorado State, Kansas State and Iowa State. Following the 2014 win over the Cyclones, college football pundits warned FBS schools to stop scheduling North Dakota State.dddddddddddd. The Big Ten, coincidentally, announced before the 2015 campaign that it would no longer play FCS teams.Larsen said it has been challenging to find FBS schools to take the leap, which is one reason why Oregon and Colorado are scheduled so far out. In addition to fears of losing to the Bison, North Dakota States physical style of offense and defense gives pause to FBS teams, Larsen said.We do get a lot of pushback, he said. That is a great sign of respect for what the football program here has done. The Big Tens decision to nix FCS games has cost NDSU the opportunity to play closer to home, which boosted fan support for a team that already travels well and helped the Bison steal a few players on the recruiting trail. North Dakota State had its best classes from the state of Minnesota after it started playing the University of Minnesota. This year the Bison play at Iowa, a game that former North Dakota State athletic director Gene Taylor lined up before moving on to become Iowas deputy athletic director. Although this years Hawkeye squad is probably the most formidable FBS opponent the Bison have ever played, Taylor said he is taking a lot of ribbing around the office. He also agreed with Larsen that its about more than money.I think if you ask the (North Dakota State) players, they want to come into Iowa and show they can compete, or at Oregon or those other places. Theyre a pretty confident bunch, Taylor said. The coaches always get a little nervous, but they know its part of the gig. If they can win the game, good for them, and if they can play well, it doesnt hurt them. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Little had gone right for the Temple Owls before they gathered around coach Fran Dunphy during a timeout. It would have been easy for them to lament their woes.Instead, as Shizz Alston Jr. recalled, their message to each other was cloaked in defiance. Were on a big stage, were not going out like this, Alston said after Temples 89-86 victory over No. 25 Florida State on Thursday in the first game of the NIT Season Tip-Off. We want to fight back.Quinton Rose scored 26 points, including two free throws with 2 seconds left. Alston Jr. added 22 points and Obi Enechionyia had 16 points and eight rebounds for the Owls (3-2).Dwayne Bacon had 22 points for the Seminoles (4-1). Jonathan Issac added 19 points. Xavier Rathan-Mayes had 11, and Terance Mann 10.Theyre so deep, Dunphy said about Florida State. So athletic. They can make shots, too.Trailing by 12 with 9:26 left, Temple went on a 15-2 run to take a 73-72 lead. The stretch began when Alston made a 3. That was followed by Roses putback, Enechionyias lay-in, two made free throws by Alston, and consecutive 3s from Alston and Damion Moore. The Owls were able to extend their advantage to 85-80 after Enechionyias made 3 with 3:18 left. But Trent Forrests lay-in with 77 seconds cut the deficit to one, 87-86.They spread the floor, Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said of Temples offensive approach in the second half. They were shooting the 3s and they spread the floor, did a great job of taking us off the dribble when they got to the foul line.Give them credit: They did what they had to do.Florida State had a chance to win, but Isaac air-balled a layup attempt with four seconds left. Roses two free throws sealed the win.We started making every shot we took, Dunphy said.BIG PICTURE:Temple: Coming off a berth in the NCAA Tournament, the Owls are looking for a repeat trip and a win over a Top 25 team is good for the resume. The biggest issue for Temple, though, will be its ability to defend well and, as Shizz Alston Jr. said, can the Owls win games comfortably?Florida State: Following five wins against lesser competition, Florida State took a step up in weight class and was fairly impressive for 30 minutes. However, college basketball games last 40. The Seminoles vaunted defense was broken down repeatedly by Temples guards and, as Leonard Hamilton noted, his team will get its fill of strong opposition once ACC play begins.POLL IMPLICATIONS:Temple: Despite the win, it is unlikely that the Owls will move into the Top 25. Temple had dropped close decisions to New Hampshire and UMass in its second and third games of the season.Florida State: During his postgame press conference, Leonard Hamilton stressed one game does not determine the outcome of a season. But it may -- and likely will -- cost the Seminoles their No. 25 ranking.NOTABLETemple: The National Invitation Tournament Tip-Off marks the sixth time in program history that the Owls participated in the early season event. Temples six appearances are tied with St. Johns for second most in tournament history; Arizona and Duke have made seven appearances apiece.Florida State: The first of two NIT Tip-Off games marked the first time since the third round of the 2012 NCAA Tournament that the Seminoles were a nationally ranked team. Following a 62-56 loss to Cincinnati in the third round, the Seminoles finished the season ranked 10th in the nation.QUOTABLEI think you can come up with a philosophical theory if you want to, but they just had a great night. They did a very good job. Im sure theyre hoping they shoot the ball that well for the remainder of the year. Im hoping we dont defend as poorly as we did tonight and I dont think we will, Florida States Leonard Hamilton, in response to a question regarding his concern about the Seminoles defense.UP NEXTTemple: Will meet West Virginia in championship game Friday.Florida State: Will meet Illinois in the consolation game Friday.---More AP college basketball at http://collegebasketball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-Top25 Colorado Avalanche Store . He did so despite losing seven defensivee starters from a season ago, when Clemson lost to Alabama in the national championship game.dddddddddddd.The second-seeded Tigers face Ohio State in the semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl on Dec. 31.Other finalists included Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, Colorado defensive coordinator Jim Leavitt, Michigan defensive coordinator Dan Brown and Pittsburgh offensive coordinator Matt Canada. NEW ORLEANS -- The man accused of murdering former New Orleans Saints standout Will Smith is now waiting for a jury of eight women and four men to decide his fate after they began deliberations just before 5 p.m. CT on Sunday evening.Lawyers for both sides passionately spent the day asking that jury to decide whether Cardell Hayes, 29, acted in self-defense or if it was another senseless act of stupidity in a city that is unfortunately known for its gun violence, as the prosecution argued. This is all about somebody getting really mad, shouted assistant district attorney Laura Rodrigue, who said it wouldnt play well to stand in front of somebody in this community and say, I just got pissed off and killed him. ... But it happens every day.Hayes attorney, John Fuller, meanwhile, spent nearly four hours pleading the case of his client, who is accused of murdering Smith and attempting to murder Smiths wife, Racquel, who was shot once through both legs before Smith was shot eight times -- including seven times in the back.Fuller claimed that Hayes did not begin shooting until he saw a weapon in Smiths hand and heard a pop -- as Hayes testified Saturday. And Fuller strongly suggested that Smith himself might have shot his own wife -- even though no evidence has been produced to show that another gun was produced, fired or found on the scene.Hayes is charged with three counts -- the second-degree murder of Smith, which carries a mandatory life sentence in Louisiana; the attempted second-degree murder of Racquel; and aggravated criminal damage to property for intentionally hitting Smiths car. The jury could also decide to find Hayes guilty of lesser offenses, including manslaughter and negligent homicide -- though both sides argued against any sort of compromise verdict in court.Mr. Smith did not deserve to die because of an accident. He did not deserve to die because he was intoxicated. But what he did was put Mr. Hayes in a position where all he could do was defend himself, said Fuller, who spent the course of the seven-day trial painting Smith and others in his party as drunken, aggressive attackers who rushed at Hayes and his friend after a pair of traffic incidents. Its not about his character, its that he wasnt acting himself on that night, Fuller argued.Fuller criticized the prosecution for never testing the DNA on the bullet they claim sailed through Racquels legs or for never putting a doctor on the stand to explain why bullet fragments couldnt be removed from Racquels legs for further evidence. The prosecution, meanwhile, called the idea that Smith shot his own wife desperation, saying the first they heard of it was when Hayes made the claim in his Saturday testimony -- pointing out that the defense never even suggested the theory in opening arguments. And the prosecution continued to insist that every bullet and every shell casing matched every wound -- and they were all traced back to one gun.Furthermore, to believe the garbage that Fuller and Hayes were spewing, Rodrigue said the jury would have to believe that someone removed the mystery gun from the scene, removed the mystery bullet from the scene and washed gunshot residue off of Smiths hands -- in front of a packed scene that was crowded with people within 30 seconds of the shooting.Rodrigue also argued that they would have to ignore the math and science of the ballistics experts, as well as the crash expert who testified that the entire incident began with Hayes intentionally ramming his car into the back of Smiths vehicle. And they would have to ignore the testimony of many witnesses.Rodrigue also argued that Hayes himself never mentioned Smith producing or firing a gun when he briefly spoke to police detectives and people on the scene in recorded conversations that night.Fuller argued that all evidence showed Hayes tried to avoid doing what he had to do and showed restraint -- while almost all witnesses testified that Smith had to be restrained by his wife. Fuller said neutral witnesses painted Smith and those in his party as the aggressors during a heated argument -- though the state argued that the witnesses did not know a crash expert had testified that Hayes intentionally caused the accident or that Hayes was the only one who exited his vehicle with a gun that night. In one of Fullers most passionate moments, he chastised assistant district attorney Jason Napoli for having the nerve to say in his initial closing argument that this case is not even close even though jurors must be torn.He had the nerve to tell you to check your brain, Fuller said. You think you wouldnt have had the emotions you had yesterday if this wasnt even close? ... How dare he tell you to check your brain.Fuller said finding closure for Ms. Smith is not why the jury is here, and a miscarriage of justice or misapplication of the law wont bring Smith back.Much of Fullers oratory also centered around a personal war of words between the attorneys, saying the prosecutors attacked him and fellow defense attorney Jay Daniels, dragging the case into the mud. Presumably, that was part of Fullers week-long attempts to paint the case as an example of Smith receiving star treatment because of his celebrity, with the full force of the DAs office on Smiths side and not his clients side.Rodrigue, however, addressed the issue of star treatment, pointing out that the state aggressively prosecuted former Saints star Darren Sharper, who was found guilty of multiple rapes in multiple states. Napoli also said in his opening remarks, saying that he couldnt agree more with Fuller, that this is a case of the haves and the have-nots -- and that Racquel and her family are the have-nots after losing their husband and father and nobody in the city would trade places with them. And both Napoli and Rodrigue made a passionate plea toward the jurors, saying it is their job to help them corral a crime problem in New Orleans that also includes the recent shooting of another former NFL player, Joe McKnight, whose funeral is scheduled for Monday, just across town from the courthouse.Napoli said if they justify what Hayes did, they might as well close this building and allow anarchy out there. You are the only weapon we have to fight back against the violence in this city, Napoli said. You all will decide what type of city we will have, how we will treat one another. No. 5 Louisville | No. 7 Virginia | Full ListNo. 6: NORTH CAROLINA TAR HEELSLast Season: 33-7, 14-4 ACCThe Tar Heels lost Brice Johnson and Marcus Paige, but return three starters -- Joel Berry II, Justin Jackson and Kennedy Meeks -- from last years team that was within a basket of winning the national title. Roy Williams also brings back key reserves Isaiah Hicks, Theo Pinson (currently injured) and Nate Britt, so UNC should have a chance to compete for another Final Four berth.?-- Jeff GoodmanBest Case:?Elite Eight. If you can reach an Elite Eight, you can also be termed a Final Four team. North Carolina has suffered in recruiting over the past four years due to the academic scandal that has been hanging over the athletic department. Instead of NBA Lottery talent, the Tar Heels relied upon some excellent players that were very experienced. North Carolina was the best team last season because it was older, tougher and experienced winning. But, with Marcus Paige and Brice Johnson gone, some go-to players are gone, too. Still, there is quality talent coming back, and the Carolina system will produce another winner. Joel Berry and Justin Jackson need to become those go-to scorers, and Isaiah Hicks needs to stay out of foul difficulty and play more minutes.Worst Case:?First-weekend casualty. North Carolina will be very good, but still vulnerable to a bad shooting night or an injury to a key player. This is not a title favorite, but it is a contending team. Still, after losing key personnel from a Final Four run, it is not horribly unusual for a ho-hum 25-win season.No. 7 Virginia | Full List Dick Witcher Jersey . IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A lot of programs refer to creating a culture that can lead teams through times of crisis.Iowas stunning 14-13 win over Michigan last week was proof that what the Hawkeyes have built in nearly two decades under coach Kirk Ferentz still works.Just one week after one of the more crushing defeats in Ferentzs 18 seasons, a 41-14 blowout at Penn State, the Hawkeyes rallied to topple the unbeaten Wolverines as a 24-point underdog. The remarkable response to the Penn State loss, guided by a veteran staff and players who have bought into what coaches were telling them even when the results werent coming, has put Iowa (6-4, 4-3 Big Ten) in position to finish a disappointing season on a high note. The Hawkeyes visit Illinois (3-7, 2-5) on Saturday. One of the points we made last week was that we probably werent going to be Big Ten champions this year. But youre either building toward it or youre taking away from it, and theres responsibility with that, Ferentz said. Its got to be a 12 month a year thing, and youre either on board or youre not.If any team appeared set for a late-season collapse, it was Iowa. Unable to stop the run and unable to catch the ball, Iowa had dropped two straight and three of its last five games. Just last week, Iowas players had talked about the need to trust their teammates and get back to the fundamentals. Most teams that say such things in November end up staying home in December. As it turned out, the Hawkeyes were right.Iowa defensive coordinator Phil Parker, who has been an assistant under Ferentz for nearly two decades, took a unit that had put together one of its worst performances in a long time and shut down the Wolverines..dddddddddddd Iowa held Michigan to just 201 yards despite losing starting cornerback Greg Mabin to an injury. Freshman Manny Rugamba stepped in and grabbed a crucial fourth-quarter interception that helped set up the game-winning drive. The big thing that coach (Ferentz) pushes is to stay focused, determined, linebacker Josey Jewell said. If you put your full effort out there and do your job, anything can happen.Offensive coordinator Greg Davis, now in his fifth season despite inconsistent results, recognized the need for Iowa to get the ball in the hands of running back Akrum Wadley as much as possible. Wadley, the only true open-field threat the Hawkeyes have left after injuries to receiver Matt VandeBerg and tight end George Kittle, had 167 combined yards and a touchdown reception to help Iowa escape from a 10-0 hole.We have a great culture here within this program. It goes into the entire offseason. Guys who work their tails off all year long, said quarterback and team captain C.J. Beathard.Beating Michigan wont erase the fact that Iowa, once the favorite to win the Big Ten West, will fall short of its expectations. All the Hawkeyes can do is hope that what clicked over the past week leads to success in the weeks ahead.Ferentz has given us certain examples in the past of Iowa history, certain things that he believes show the resilience, the determination of other teams and how that worked out for them, Jewell said. He really forces it into your head. But its a good kind of forcing.---More college football at www.collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '

BOSTON -- Tyler Duffey was trailing Boston by a run after throwing just one pitch. It didnt get much better from there for Minnesotas young right-hander or the pitchers that followed him.Mookie Betts hit a leadoff homer on the first pitch he faced from Duffey and the next three Boston batters singled as the Red Sox rode the early lead to a 13-2 rout of the Twins on Thursday night. When theyre in a groove like that, if you dont make them uncomfortable they can lean on some stuff, Duffey said. When guys are confident, its hard to get them out sometimes.Duffey (5-7) allowed four hits in the first, one in the second and then four more in the third. His night ended after Jackie Bradley Jr. doubled for Bostons ninth hit with one out in the third and the Red Sox up 6-0.They were just jumping on fastballs, breaking balls -- it didnt matter. They had a lot of good at bats, manager Paul Molitor said. It got ugly. Weve havent had a game like that in a while.Dustin Pedroia went 5 for 5 with two doubles for Boston, which had 17 hits while winning its third straight and improving to 12-3 in July. David Ortiz added a two-run homer in the eighth and Jackie Bradley Jr. hit a solo homer and finished with three RBI.Steven Wright (12-5) tied his career high with nine strikeouts and held Minnesota to four hits in eight innings. The Twins didnt reach base against the knuckleballer until the fifth and finished with five hits.We just didnt have a lot of offense to muster off of him, Molitor said. He had the lead and you knew he was going to ride it out for a while. The Twins added a ground-rule double by pinch-hitter Eduardo Escobar in the ninth off reliever Clay Buchholz.Max Kepler got Minnesotas first hit, singling with one out in the fifth to start a two-run rally that turned out to be the only offense for the Twins. He added a single in the seventh and was the only Minnesota batter with more than one hit.The Red Sox were up 11-2 in the eighth when Ortiz continued his farewell tour with his 24th homer, a shot deep into the seats in right field.DUFFEY DONE EARLYAfter winning his last three decisions, Duffey didnt last long in his first game pitching at Fenway Park.Coming in here, its going to be loud and stuff like that. Theyre all waiting on the edge of their seat for something awesome to happen, Duffey said. Early on, first pitch of the game -- home run. Thats never a good taste in your mouth.Duffey said it wasnt a bad pitch, but he left a little too much of it over the plate and Betts pounced on it. He also thought he pitched well overall, just not quite well enough against the surging Red Sox.I was ahead of a lot of guys. I just didnt put them away, he said.POTENT LINEUPThe Red Sox managed to outdo their 16-hit total from an 11-7 win against San Francisco on Wednesday night and finished with at least 15 hits for the 15th time this season. They put together some good at bats, Molitor said. If he (Duffey) got ahead, they fought their way back in the count.TRAINERS ROOMTwins: OF Bryon Buxton was not in the starting lineup for the Twins as manager Paul Molitor rested him against Wrights knuckleball. The Rebels made good use of the free-throw line, finishing 28 of 33 (85 percent), including 17 consecutive conversions in the final eight minutes.Deandre Burnett scored 19 points and Cullen Neal added 12 for the Rebels (6-2), who used a 20-3 run in the second half to wipe out a 66-61 deficit. We played hard and I was proud of the effort, Memphis coach Tubby Smith said. We had that one stretch where we just blew up. It began when we fouled a 3-point shooter and you cant do that. Weve got to play smarter, but Ole Miss made plays when they had to. Credit them.Memphis (6-2) was led by K. J. Lawson with 17 points, while Markel Crawford and Jeremiah Martin had 16 and 14 points, respectively. CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Canada moved one step closer to the 2015 Rugby World Cup in England with a 27-9 victory over the United States in the qualifying series opener on Saturday. Phil Mack, DTH van der Merwe and Harry Jones each scored tries for Canada while fullback James Pritchard added 12 points. Canada will take an 18-point advantage into next weeks qualifying series finale at BMO Field in Toronto. "Certainly weve got a lot of work to do before next Saturday, but Im really happy with the way we stuck through it." said head coach Kieran Crowley. The Canadians got off to a quick start when Mack took a pass from van der Merwe and chipped the ball over the defender before diving over the line for the first score of the game. Pritchard added the conversion to make it 7-0. MOBILE, Ala. -- Anna Nordqvist was putting like a rookie again -- and thats a good thing. The Swede said she had perhaps her first "really good putting day" since her rookie year in 2009 with a course-record 61 on Saturday in the third round of the Mobile Bay LPGA Classic. South Koreas Chella Choi shot her second straight 6-under 66 to take a one-stroke lead over Jessica Korda and Nordqvist, who is seeking her first win since capturing the LPGA Championship and season-ending LPGA Tour Championship as a rookie. "I just felt like I tried to trust myself and trust my line and just hit it," Nordqvist said. "Usually, Im very close to making a lot of putts but its just the difference of making them. It just felt like sometimes I couldnt miss." Choi twice made three straight birdies to move to 17 under, and has made only two bogeys in three rounds on The Crossings course at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trails Magnolia Grove complex. Her best finish in four-plus years on the tour is a tie for second in the Manulife tournament in Canada last March. Choi, who had three top-five finishes last year, said she started checking out the leaderboard "every hole" at the start of the tournament and feels mentally stronger now in her bid to finally get a win. "I know my shot and my putting," she said. "I think just my mental and my experience and just confidence ... so I think I can do it. Hopefully." Nordqvist broke the course record of 62 set by Sydnee Michaels on Friday. Korda, the second-round leader, shot a 69. The American had a bogey on No. 11 when the ball landed in a divot and she tweaked her right wrist, and a double bogey on No. 12. She rebounded with a 33-foot eagle putt on the 16th hole. "It was left to right and it was pretty," Korda said, laughing. That was set up by what she said was a 325-foot drive sparked by the mentality that: "Oh, I havent hit the green in two almost all day, I need to go for it." Nordqvist had a run of five birdies starting on the third hole and added a 10-foot eagle putt on the par-5 13th hole. Nordqvist, who did have one bogey, holed a par-saving bunker shot from some 10 yards on 12. "Today was a lot of fun," she said. "I started out with a couple birdies, hit a lot of good shots, and I think I missed one green. And then I made that bunker shot and it was just like, I couldnt stop smiling, couldnt stop laughing." Win drought aside, the former Arizona State player thinks her game has improved substantially since making the splash as a rookie because shes more consistent. "Its fun being in contention and having people watch," she said. "Thats what you work hard for. Its a lot more fun playing up there than playing for 50th or 60th, so its a good place to be." Defending champion Stacy Lewis was four strokes back with a 63 after opening the day in 35th. She won both Alabama tournaments last year. Lewis had a string of four straight birdies from Nos. 5-8 to start a stretch of eight in 10 holes. Gone were the mistakes of the previous two days when she had a double bogey and two bogeys each round for 70s. "It was one of those stress-free days," Lewis said. "I needed something like that to get back into the tournament." Webb and Korda will play together for the fourth straight round. Webb had her first bogey since early Thursday but already had three birdies in the first six holes. "I got off to really quite a nice start," the 38-year-old Australian said. "I was cruising along and then threw a three-putt in there on No. 7 and sort of lost a bit of my momentum there and didnt really get it going again. I had a lot of in-between numbers today and just wasnt guessing right." The courses low round entering the week was 64 by Danielle Downey in 2008 and Webb and Sjodin in 2011. In fact, Lewiss low round in last years win was 67. That might not cut it on a weekend when Webb pointed out, "I nearly got lapped at 69." Charlottetowns Lorie Kane shot a 67, and is nine back at 8-under 208. Sue Kim of Langley, B.C., turned in a 72, leaving her at 210. Jessica Shepley of Oakville, Ont., shot a 70, and is at 214. Its official - Parramattas NRL top-eight hopes are over after falling 34-14 to the Titans in Saturday evenings clash on the Gold Coast. In contrast, the seventh-placed Titans remain in sight of their first finals campaign in six years after a five-tries-to-three triumph in front of 15,273 fans at cbus Super Stadium. However, Parramatta coach Brad Arthur said there was still plenty to gain from their nightmare season. Our season may be over but we have standards and expectations - that is all we can judge ourselves on, he said.We have to ask ourselves at the end of the year did we maintain those standards or take the easy option?.The Eels had been holding onto hope that winning their remaining seven matches would keep them in the finals mix.In a year of lurching from controversy to controversy for Parramatta, Eels fans would still have been disheartened by the events of the past week.Wayward five-eighth Corey Norman watched from the Gold Coast sidelines after being suspended for eight weeks and fined $20,000 for a string of off-field incidents, including a conviction for drug possession.Parramatta were also taken over by a NSW government-appointed administrator on Tuesday in the wake of their salary-cap scandals which resulted in them being fined $1 million and docked 12 competition points. But the loss finally derailed the Eels unlikely finals run.Captain Beau Scott (ankle) was cut before the match while hooker Isaac De Gois (suspected knee) limped off in the 64th minute as Parramatta slid to third last on 12 points.Weve got probably three quarters of the salary cap sitting on the sidelines, Arthur said of their long list of unavailable players including playmaker Kieran Foran. We will just add them (De Gois, Scott) to the list.We will find some (back-up).If anything, I would rather them (injuries) this year than next year.Eels stand-in skipper Tim Mannah said it was pretty easy to ignore their off-field dramas. This is a resilient, tough group, he said. The attitude we have makes it a lot easier to deal with situations that look pretty messy from the outside.I think we will be better for it once we come through it.Happier days appear ahead for the Titans. They will back themselves to crack the top eight for the first time since 2010 after downing Parramatta - the first of three straight home fixtures. The Titans overcame the loss of suspended former NSW Origin player Greg Bird to book their second straight win.The Gold Coast may need to win just three of their remaining six games to guarantee a finals berth.Henry admitted many would be surprised by the Gold Coasts finals push after being dismissed as no chance by so-called pre-season experts. But the Titans mentor urged his side to keep the shocks coming.Everyone is surprised by our performances, but were not, Henry said ahead of two-straight home games. It (finals) is in our own hands. We have fought to be in that head space. Now we need to maintain it.A finals tilt would cap a remarkable Titans turnaround.Just last year the NRL took over control of the Titans in a nightmare 12-month period which also included the Daly Cherry-Evans backflip and a cocaine scandal. It (turnaround) is on the back of leadership, Henry said.Plus guys we have recruited are getting the job done (and) weve handled a bit of adversity with injuries. Its also about winning back fans by playing a brand of football that we are proud of.We will keep pushing. After trailing 14-4 at halftime, Parramatta cut the deficit to six points when prolific winger Bevan French crossed in the 58th minute for his 10th try of the season. But the Titans were not to be denied.Back-rower Chris McQueen bagged his double by the 71st minute before halfback Ash Taylors 40m intercept try in the dying moments iced the result.Gold Coast jumped to a 14-0 lead by the 19th minute after tries to Titans recruit Konrad Hurrell, Anthony Don and McQueen.Eels back-rower Ken Edwards put the visitors on the scoreboard running off Clint Gutherson in the 36th minute.Titans veteran hooker Nathan Friend (hamstring) left the field in the 34th minute in addition to the Eels rake de Gois (suspected knee issue) who limped off in the 64th. Yeezy Boost 350 V2 Butter For Sale .J. -- Josh Cribbs was in the Pro Bowl in February and out of a job six months later. WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. -- Denny Hamlin wasnt about to get shoved aside again.Ignoring what he described as the worst pain he has ever felt in a race, Hamlin prevailed in a four-lap dash to the checkered flag Sunday to win the wreck-filled Sprint Cup race at newly paved Watkins Glen International. Its the first road course win of Hamlins Cup career and atoned for his stunning loss on the road course at Sonoma in June, when he was beaten by Tony Stewart with a bang on the last turn. Its very hard to win these races, Hamlin said. I only made one mistake at Sonoma, and I didnt win.Hamlin was virtually flawless at The Glen and was able to conserve enough fuel at the end, thanks to eight cautions for 20 laps. The race also had two red-flag stoppages for 30 minutes. We executed perfectly. Didnt make any mistakes on pit road, Hamlin said. Hoping for those caution laps that we needed. That allowed us to make it on fuel. That Hamlin was behind the wheel of the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota was in doubt before the race. He was in pain when he awoke.Knew I was in pretty big trouble, said Hamlin, who has undergone two knee surgeries in his career. I was thinking under the [last] red flag Lets get this over with so I can get out of this car.The race was shaping up as another duel between Brad Keselowski and Kyle Busch in the closing laps. But a rash of late cautions shuffled Busch back.Keselowski restarted with the lead with 25 laps to go in the 90-lap race, and Busch stalked him in second as the leaders began turning the fastest laps of the race around the 2.45-mile layout with the end in sight. The sixth caution flew on Lap 78 for a blown engine and erased a five-second lead the two leaders had built over Hamlin, Martin Truex Jr. and Joey Logano, who was seeking his second straight sweep of the Cup and Xfinity races at The Glen.Keselowski lost the lead on the restart when both he and Busch overdrove the first turn, a 90-degree downhill right-hander, and Hamlin sneaked past to take the lead before another caution flew. When I saw them move forward and lunge into the corner, I knew there was no way for them to get out with any sensible speed, Hamlin said. It was my opportunity.Hamlin held a slim lead over Truex and Keselowski as the three ran nose-to-tail entering the final turns of the race. Keselowski spun Truex in the last turn and Hamlin coasted to the victory.Logano finished second, and Keselowski, AJ Allmendinger, Stewart and Busch completed the top six.We got ourselves in positioon to win the race, but I didnt have the speed to make it happen, Logano said.ddddddddddddJeff Gordon drove the No. 88 Chevy for Hendrick Motorsports in relief of Dale Earnhardt Jr. for the third straight race and finished 14th in his 800th career start after an early accident. Earnhardt is recovering from a concussion and is expected to miss at least two more races.Buescher survives: Despite a pit road penalty and a late crash, Chris Buescher remained on the cusp of making the Chase for the Sprint Cup title after finishing 30th, one lap down. The surprise winner last week in the rain at Pocono came to Watkins Glen six points outside the top 30 in points, a requirement for making the postseason Chase, and now trails David Ragan by three points. Ragan also was involved in a crash and finished 33rd.You know, for us, kind of hoped wed get a lot more than what we did, Buescher said. Its a bummer the way it worked out.Infractions, infractions: NASCAR increased the number of timing lines on pit road at Watkins Glen from six to 14 this year, and it ended up costing a lot of drivers a lot of time. Of the 31 infractions handed out, seven were for speeding. A tire out of the pit box was costly for pole sitter Carl Edwards. He led the first 25 laps, suffered the penalty on his first pit stop, and finished 15th after getting spun in an altercation with Ragan and Clint Bowyer. The crash: There were two more crashes coming out of the sweeping carousel turn coming to the backstretch. The big one came when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. lost control of his No. 17 Ford coming out of the sweeping right-hander and skidded across the track. Jimmie Johnson slammed hard into Stenhouse, and Greg Biffle and Austin Dillon also were involved. Johnson finished last. That crowd: While most NASCAR venues dont attract the crowds they used to, Watkins Glen, with its fantastic finishes, remains an exception. The track announced its second straight grandstand sellout. Although attendance figures arent released, the crowd estimate was just under 100,000.Im sure the fans loved it, Logano said. It was pretty cool when I pulled over for the red flag in front of the grandstands and I could hear just fans screaming and yelling and loving it. I thought, Man, this is really cool to be in the drivers seat right now. Up next: Night race at Bristol on Aug. 20. Logano is the defending winner. ' ' '

By the end of this week, Englands cricketers will have had to decide whether or not to tour Bangladesh. The official word is to go, but the spectre of terrorism weighs heavily on young men to whom the world has become a small and threatening place. This very personal choice will be driven by instinct, opinion at home, and not least by the extent of their own ambitions. Of course, no one wants to give in to terrorism but it really isnt that simple. Englands cricketers know their homeland and live within its problems and parameters every day of their lives. Bangladesh is an unknown. Alastair Cook has given a lead but it is not a directive. For the sake of Bangladesh, we must hope the players follow him. For those who do not, there will be neither blame nor shame. In a very different age I toured Bangladesh with the MCC. It was 1981, just a few months before Ian Botham turned the Ashes upside down, and over a four-week period 14 English cricketers of varied talents came to see the world through a new lens. We stayed in a two-star hotel in Dhaka, along with a legion or more of cockroaches, and in essentially primitive government rest houses everywhere else. Mostly we ate eggs, though the stoical among us quite enjoyed the curries served for lunch at the matches. On some evenings we had chicken, boiled or fried - at best you would call it stringy - and on others more spicy local food made with vegetables. We didnt touch the tap water, drank a little whisky if we could lay our hands on it and slugged back dark green bottle after bottle of 7 Up. On visits to the British High Commission, we loaded up on beer treated with preservatives, which gave us crushing hangovers. No one grumbled. When we awoke each morning, the sun was shining. We played on hard-baked mud pitches against good cricketers and held our own. The crowds that greeted us in the towns did so with an almost ghoulish fascination, first staring as if we were from another planet - which we sort of were - and then breaking out in bursts of cheer and encouragement. At the cricket grounds, the reaction was different. Our best efforts were greeted by silence, as if they hadnt happened. This was in direct contrast to the efforts of their own team, which were celebrated with a manic zeal. It is not so very different on the subcontinent today, though the IPL appears to have led to a greater appreciation of the game at large - as opposed to only the celebrities who play it.The captain of that MCC tour, Michael Mence, had to return home early due to dysentery. John Hampshire stood in for him and, though afflicted by stomach ailments himself, led us with the sort of no-nonsense approach required for such demanding conditions and feisty opponents. Most of us remember these eye-opening experiences with fondness. There was no luxury, just a common purpose and the resulting camaraderie. But this was not the world inhabited by the England players today. The nearest we got to a threat of terrorism was the third afternoon of the Dhaka Test, when an abrasive section of the huge crowd lit a fire in one of the stands, possibly because we had manoeuvred a promising position in the match. We left the field for an hour or so until the police sorted it. We were amateurs, touring out of choice and doing all we could for crickets global reach. Our aims and ambitions were far removed from those of the professionals of the moment. It is a fact that Islamic militants claimed responsibility for attacks that killed 29 people in a restaurant in Dhaka only two months ago and that a week later another attack led to four more deaths. No one knows whether it is safe for England to tour Bangladesh today. Equally, no one knows if it is safe for Bangladesh to tour England or, specifically, for any tourist to shop in the centre of London. Hardly anywhere in the cricketing firmament is categorically safe anymore - parts of the Caribbean maybe. But the game must go on if at all possible, otherwise there is no game. The ECB security team has covered the bases. The experts say there is no reason to cancel the tour. Each of the players has the right to make his own choice, and those who decide against might have to accept the consequences of absence if their replacement performs well. This is a part of the circle of life. We all make choices and have to accept the result of them.Security will be detailed and tight, making life less relaxed than would otherwise be the case. Cricketers mainly limit themselves to nearby cafés, restaurants and shopping malls, and these are as much a lottery as they would be anywhere else. This might be a tour on which to train hard, play hard and bunker down. The ground and the hotel will be alive with police and armed forces. The journey to and from will be protected by an armed guard. No stone will be left unturned to ensure safe passage. This is good enough for the England captain and might well prove to be good enough for the players under his command. Cook is not a man easily diverted from his responsibilities and his commitment to the cause is writ large in the position he has taken. Eoin Morgan is less sure. Cricket remains the one sport in which the captains word still echoes more loudly than that of the coach. Morgan has understandable concerns, and probably a general suspicion that the risk, at such a time of unrest, outweighs the potential reward of three one-day internationals in foreign conditions for his fast developing team. As it happens, the two England coaches - Trevor Bayliss and Paul Farbrace - can offer an interesting perspective since both were working with Sri Lanka when the team bus was attacked by terrorists in Lahore in 2009. They can provide reassurance and also a dose of reality. Farbrace has said that he sees no reason not to tour.Either a player wants to go or he doesnt. Both options are fine. One point for the players to absorb from outside the collective is that the decision should not be clouded, consciously or subconsciously, by the challenging playing conditions or the limited attractions of Dhaka and Chittagong. There is a nice golf course in Dhaka, and a club or two, but thats about it on the recreation front. In general the pitches will be dry, bare and slow - not to everyones taste but a good rehearsal for India. If you tour Bangladesh, you tour for the cricket and for the joy of the people. You spread a gospel and inspire a movement for the game that has given you the life you love. It means a great deal to Bangladesh that England go there. More than it does to England that Bangladesh come here. Bangladesh faces the challenges of poverty, overpopulation, global warming and now terrorism. It is not a lucky country but it is a wonderful country, if not in the way of the wonders that are perceived to make this contemporary world spin round. And it is a cricketing country, where escape is found in the games of bat and ball. This is not to say that, individually, the England players have a responsibility to Bangladesh. Far from it. The responsibility is to themselves and their families. There is no case for persuasion or influence - only for reassurance and due diligence from the board, which has been both thoughtful and thorough. In this case, influence comes by example. Cook has laid out a marker. Andrew Strauss, Englands director of cricket, is bound to be on the plane too. Whatever individual choices are made, the ECBs determination to go ahead is the right thing by Bangladesh and will be seen as an inspiration to the game. Jerry Rice Super Bowl Jersey . Edwin Encarnacion had a two-out, bases loaded two-RBI double in the third inning. Seventh-ranked Louisville welcomes some down time after slipping out of the national title discussion.Plenty of time remains for the Cardinals to be reconsidered, though, and much now depends on how they and Heisman Trophy front-runner Lamar Jackson rebound from last Saturdays loss to No. 3 Clemson.Coach Bobby Petrino said this weeks bye comes at a good time for Louisville (4-1, 2-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). Besides allowing players to heal from a grueling opening stretch that included complete domination of then-No. 2 Florida State and a tough 42-36 loss at Clemson, the Cardinals get to regroup and figure out how to run the table.Even with the loss, theyre obviously in a better place one year after entering the break 2/3 and trying to salvage a season.Weve had a very grueling schedule and a lot of intensity, a couple of huge, huge games, Petrino said this week. So I think its a good opportunity for us to settle in and get our schoolwork done and everything we need to do with class work, get back to technique and fundamentals, kind of go back to half of the practice being camp practice where you go ones-on-ones and work hard on it.Then, some of your guys are able to heal up, he said. So, for us its a great time for our bye.Especially since it allows Jackson to recharge and follow up his dynamic start.Any discussion of the Heisman has begun with the 6-3, 204-pound sophomore, who has passed and rushed for 14 touchdowns each and combined for 2,313 yards. The national leader in several offensive categories has room for improvement after throwing a career-high three interceptions and fumbling once at Clemson, but his leadership showed as he finished with 306 yards passing and positioned Louisville to have one final chance that fell a yard short on fourth down.ddddddddddddThe frustrated look on Jacksons face after his mistakes spoke volumes about his desire to get it right, an attitude he has shown in workouts this week.Well mess up a play and Lamar will immediately come back with, `Lets do it again, Louisville wide receiver Jaylen Smith said on Petrinos weekly radio show. You have to want to be perfect. The Cardinals task now is a perfect finish they hope will keep them on the radar for the four-team playoff. Their remaining schedule seems favorable toward regaining that dominance.Louisville hosts Duke on Oct. 14 in the first of five straight ACC games before the Cardinals visit No. 6 Houston in a non-conference showdown on Nov. 17 that could shape their playoff prospects. That conference docket certainly isnt easy, with North Carolina State, Boston College and Wake Forest all boasting winning records.Overtaking Clemson to win the Atlantic Division would require two losses by the Tigers, an unlikely scenario considering they seem energized by clearing their toughest challenge to date. Louisville remains unfazed and challenged to improve on offense, defense and special teams and play its best football from here on.Weve got a lot of pride on our team, Petrino said, and guys were able to watch the (Clemson) video and know that we competed extremely hard. (We) just had 15 or 20 plays in there, where if we make one of them, the outcomes different. Were going to stick together as a team, have a great attitude and continue to work hard and try to improve, the coach added.---AP College Football: collegefootball.ap.org---Follow Gary B. This summers Olympic and Paralympic Games in Rio could trigger a full-blown global health disaster and must be postponed or relocated, according to a professor writing in the Harvard Public Health Review. Amir Attaran, professor of law and medicine at the University of Ottawa, says the outbreak of the Zika virus is more dangerous and extensive than previously thought and its inevitable spread worldwide may be accelerated when an estimated 500,000 foreign tourists visit Rio for the Games. The current Zika outbreak was first identified in Brazil in April 2015 and has been linked to cases of microcephaly - when babies are born with below-average head sizes - across large parts of South and Central America. Professor Attaran wrote: Zika infection is more dangerous, and Brazils outbreak more extensive, than scientists reckoned a short time ago. Which leads to a bitter truth: the 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games must be postponed, moved, or both, as a precautionary concession. All it takes is one infected traveller. Analyses establish that Brazils cataclysmic outbreak stems from a single viral introduction event likely between May and December 2013. A few viral introductions of that kind, in a few countries, or maybe continents, would make a full-blown global health disaster. It has been claimed that Rio is at the heart of the Zika outbreak Mass migration into the heart of an outbreak is a public health no-brainer. Putting sentimentality aside, clearly the Rio 2016 Games must not proceed.Zika is carried and spread by mosquitoes, although there have also been reported cases of sexual transmission. It was initially linked only to severe birth defects, but subsequent clinical studies have also shown health implications for adults, including the debilitating and sometimes fatal Guillain-Barré syndrome. The outbreak has been declared a global public health emergency by the World Health Organisation (WHO), but the International Olympic Committee (IOC) stated earlier this year that Rio was only on the periphery of infected areas and that the Games could proceed safely. However, Professor Attaran wrote: Rio de Janeiros suspected Zika cases are the highest of any state in Brazil (26,000), and its Zika incidence rate is the fourth worst (157 per 100,000). Or in other words: according to Brazils official data, Rio is not on the fringes of the outbreak, but inside its heart. The International Olympic Committee insists the Games will be safe Proceeding with the Games violates what the Olympics stand for. How socially responsible or ethical is it to spread disease? When contacted by Sky Sports, the IOC replied with a statement that read: We are working with our partners in Rio on measures to deal with the pools of stagnant water around the Olympic venues, where the mosquitoes breed, to minimise the risk of visitors coming into contact with them. It is also important to note that the Rio 2016 Games will take place during the winter months of August and September, when the drier, cooler climate significantly reduces the presence of mosquitoes and therefore the risk of infection. The Olympic Games take place from August 5-21, with the Paralympic Games following from September 7-18. Ramos is nursing a left knee injury, while Pique is recovering from sprained ligaments in his right ankle.Weve had to restructure the defense the best way possible, Lopetegui said, not dismissing the possibility of having to improvise with right back Cesar Azpilicueta at center back. The Chelsea player has played in the position in tthe past.ddddddddddddther options for Lopetegui include Real Madrids Nacho Fernandez, Real Sociedads Inigo Martinez, Sevillas Sergio Escudero and Borussia Dortmunds Marc Bartra. With Costa not playing up front, Alvaro Morata and Aritz Aduriz should get a chance to perform alongside each other in the lineup. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State accomplished something on Sunday that hasnt happened in Leonard Hamiltons 29 seasons and 879 games as a college coach -- hit triple digits in consecutive games. The Seminoles rolled to a 100-71 victory over Detroit Mercy as they were 40 of 70 from the field and had five players in double figures. It is the first time since December of 1996 -- against Jacksonville and Tennessee State -- that FSU has scored 100 or more in back-to-back gamesPart of our plan is to play a lot of guys and hopefully wear our opponents down, Hamilton said. We took them out of their rhythm, got some stops and got out in transition. It is the 15th time -- and seventh in 15 seasons at Florida State -- that a Hamilton team has reached the century mark. He accomplished it six times in four seasons at Oklahoma State and twice in 10 years at Miami.Dwayne Bacon led the Seminoles (4-0) with 22 points and freshman Jonathan Isaac got his first double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Terrance Mann (11), Xavier Rathan-Mayes (10) and Trent Forrest also scored in double figures.FSU scored 100 points despite making just 1 of 14 3-pointers. They were 39 of 56 inside the perimeter and had a huge 78-26 advantage on points in the paint. A lot of the Seminoles paint points came in the transition game as they had 20 fast-break points.Florida State led 48-35 at halftime before Detroit Mercy closed within eight (64-56) with 13:13 remaining on a Chris Jenkins jumper. The Seminoles then put it out of reach with a 32-4 run over an eight-minute span. At one point it was a 22-2 run as they hit 11 straight from the field. Were a pretty good offensive team. We like to get out and run. Thats what weve been preaching along with defense, Rathan-Mayes said. These games we have shown we can play at a really high pace. Were doing what we want to and getting wins while doing it.Jenkins led the Titans (1-3) with 16 points and Jaleel Hogan added 14. The game was part of the NIT Season Tip-Off.We knew that at some point their length and depth can have the propensity to wear you down and we saw that today. Our group has been battle tested against athletic teams but not as much as today, said Detroit Mercy coach Bacari Alexander.BIG PICTUREDetroit Mercy: The Titans, who were picked in the preseason to finish sixth in the Horizon League, came into the game shooting 40.3 percent on 3-pointers but were 8 of 22 (36.4 percent) against FSU. They made just two of their last seven.Florida State: Going into the week, Hamilton said facing Iona, Winthrop and Detroit Mercy -- who are consistently good mid-major programs -- would be a good early indicator of his teams progress. Hamilton has to be pleased as the Seminoles averaged 99.7 points in the three wins and won by an average margin of 21.3 points.STAT OF THE NIGHTFlorida State is 4-0 for the fourth time in Hamiltons tenure but this is the first time it has happened since 2013-14, when it started 6-0.FRESHMAN STANDOUTIsaac had some jitters during his first game against Charleston Southern and scored just 10 points with three rebounds. In the past five games he is averaging 16 points and seven rebounds.Hes a guard at 6-foot-11 that plays very much like Kevin Durant, Bacon said. If youre looking at Kevin Durant right now, hes averaging almost a double-double every game. Jonathan can do that too for us. Hes a guy that can easily get 10 boards just because of how long he is. The Australian mens tennis team for the Rio Olympics has been robbed of yet more star power, with Lleyton Hewitt opting out as coach.?Tennis Australia has applied to the Australian Olympic Committee to replace Hewitt with Mark Draper, with the former world No.1 reportedly citing personal reasons for withdrawing. But in better news, rising Australian star Jordan Thompson has won a late call-up to contest the mens singles in Rio alongside countrymen Thanasi Kokkinakis and John Millman.Thompson advanced to the second round of the French Open in May before losing 12-10 in the fifth set to Croatian stalwart Ivo Karlovic, helping lift the Australians world ranking to a career-high of 88.With Wimbledon runner-up Milos Raonic joining the list of Rio withdrawals on Friday - in part due to fears over the Zika virus - a spot opened up for the 22-year-old Thompson. In addition to the captaincy duties, Hewitt had previously expressed interest in also seeking a wildcard doubles entry at the Games. His exit is another big blow to the team after the nations top two male players, Nick Kyrgios and Bernard Tomic, withdrew from contention. The controversial duo both made themselves unavailable for selection after engaging in spats with Australian team chef de mission Kitty Chiller.Hewitt is a three-time Olympian, having donned the green and gold at the 2000, 2008 and 2012 Games. His most successful campaign came at the 2012 London Games, when he went down in three sets to Novak Djokovic in the third round of the singles and also advanced to the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles with Samantha Stosur.Australias womens team should be much stronger than the mens outfit in Rio, with Stosur and Daria Gavrilova both entered in the singles and doubles. LOS ANGELES -- Todd Gurley rushed for a touchdown in his preseason debut, and the Los Angeles Rams defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 21-20 on Saturday night.Gurley, who was held out of exhibition games last season as a rookie while recovering from a torn ACL, rushed for 20 yards on four carries and scored on a 3-yard run. With the Chiefs (0-2) holding out four defensive starters, including safety Eric Berry and linebacker Josh Mauga, the starting offensive line played four series and allowed Rams running backs Gurley, Benny Cunningham and Malcolm Brown to rush for 85 yards on 15 carries.Case Keenum started at quarterback and led the Rams (2-0) to two touchdowns, going 4 of 5 for 53 yards with an 11-yard scoring pass to Pharoh Cooper before giving way to rookie Jared Goff. The No. 1 overall draft pick mostly struggled for the second consecutive week despite working with the first-unit offensive line for two series. Goff lost a fumble after tripping over left guard Cody Wichmann and fumbled out of bounds while being sacked.Goffs first touchdown pass came on a 10-yard throw to Brown, who made a juggling catch to put the Rams ahead early in the fourth quarter. Goff played the entire second half and finished 8 of 12 for 82 yards.Alex Smith was 9 of 12 for 137 yards and one touchdown, leading the Chiefs to 17 points on four possessions. Smiths pump-fake on a 20-yard touchdown pass completely fooled two Rams defenders and allowed Jeremy Maclin to step into the end zone untouched.Maclin and Rams cornerback Lamarcus Joyner were ejected with 44 seconds left in the first half after trading slaps to the head.Referee Pete Morelli accidentally identified Joyner as playing for St. Louis, resulting in boos from the Coliseum crowd.Jabriel Washington recovered quarterback Aaron Murrays fumble at the Rams 23-yard line to seal the win. The Chiefs forced a three-and-out to get the ball back with 1:22 left, but Murray threw four incompletions to end the threat.ROOKIE WATCHChiefs: D.J. White started at cornerback, working opposite last seasons Defensive Rookie of the Year Marcus Peters. The sixth-round pick from Georgia Tech was effective when blitzing, but had mixed results in coverage. White finished with one tackle.Rams: The Rams loaded up on rookie wide receivers hoping to find complements to Tavon Austin and Kenny Britt, but are still waiting for someone to break through. Cooper scored on his only reception, while Paul McRoberts added one catch for 6 yards. Production is more likely to come from the tight ends Tyler Higbee, who did not play because of illness, and Temarrick Hemingway, who had a 26-yard reception from Goff.POSITION BATTLESChiefs: Nick Foles was solid against his former team, going 18 of 22 for 133 yards. With Tyler Bray status uncertain after suffering a small chip fracture in his cervical spine last week against the Seattle Seahawks, Foles experience as a starter with the Rams and Philadelphia Eagles represents a significant upgrade behind Smith regardless of when the fourth-year quarterback from Tennessee is able to return.Rams: With the secondary struggling again, cornerback E.J. Gaines first live action since suffering a foot injury in training camp last year was a welcome sign. Gaines finished with four tackles and it wouldnt be a surprise if he started opposite Trumaine Johnson next week at Denver.INJURY UPDATEChiefs: Fullback Trey Millard was taken off the field on a cart after suffering a left knee injury covering a punt. Millard previously tore the ACL in his left knee as a senior at

Parramatta NRL star Semi Radradra has been detained by police and is assisting them with inquiries in relation to an allegation of domestic violence. The winger, was put into an unmarked car by police at Sydney International Airports loading dock just before 11pm (AEST), after he returned on a flight from Fiji.A 24 year-old man has been detained by police at Sydney Airport tonight, a NSW Police media spokesperson said.He has been taken to Mascot police station, where he is assisting police with inquiries in relation to domestic violence. The winger returned to Australia to face battles on various fronts, his former partner having sought an apprehended violence order against him following allegations of multiple assaults. There was also confusion about his playing future with reports the flyer was seeking a release from his NRL contract to play in France.Former teammate Jarryd Hayne was left to do the talking, the ex-Eel sharing the flight with Radradra from Nadi. Hayne said he was more worried about Radradra as a person than as an athlete. The NFL convert, who is now seeking a start for Fiji in rugby sevens at the Rio Olympics, said it was just a coincidence that the pair was on the same flight but that hed had a good conversation with the Eels winger.Fijian born Radradra is still expected to train with Parramatta on Friday morning and play against Cronulla on Saturday.Asked about how Radradra had reacted to the developments of the last 48 hours when details of the AVO became public knowledge, Hayne said: It has been a bit of mayhem by all reports but I think the biggest advice I gave to him is hes got to run a tight ship.Hayne has returned from Fiji for treatment on a hip injury in a bid to remain in contention for their sevens team to be named in two weeks. Ken Casner . The Croatian served 21 aces and hit 42 winners against Sijsling, who double-faulted to give Cilic a 4-3 lead in the deciding set. Murray beat Sam Querrey 7-6 (5), 6-7 (3), 6-1, 6-3 to clinch Britains opening-round victory against the United States on Sunday at Petco Park. "Im proud of the way Im playing just now, because I had to do a lot of work to get back to where I want to be," Murray said after celebrating with his teammates on the red clay court in a temporary stadium in left field of the downtown home of baseballs San Diego Padres. Whisenhunt said he hit it off quickly with Ruston Webster when interviewing for the job Friday night. CARNOUSTIE, Scotland -- Woody Austin made four birdies in a six-hole stretch on the back nine and finished with a 4-under 68 to take the first-round lead in the Senior British Open. The 52-year-old Austin rebounded from bogeys on Nos. 9 and 10 with birdies on 11, 12, 14 and 16. He has struggled after winning three times in four events this year on the PGA Tour Champions. It seems, I forgot how to play after that, Austin said. Its been really bad since. Its been unfortunately a long stretch of really ugliness.Mark OMeara was a stroke back along with Carlos Franco, Esteban Toledo, Joe Durant, Tom Byrum, Scott McCarron and Peter Fowler. Franco, from Paraguay, qualified Monday. The wind was 10-15 mph at Carnoustie Golf Links with a mix of sun and clouds and a high in the 60s.I think the rain yesterday softened the course a little bit, OMeara said. We were pretty fortunate. The wind laid down just a little bit in the middle of our round out there, so it was a little bit more playable. But Carnoustie is a very demanding golf course. You have to ddrive the ball well.dddddddddddd You have to be accurate with your iron shots, and then youve got to putt well.Austin won the last of his four PGA Tour titles in the 2013 Sanderson Farms Championship.Im not into grinding, Austin said. Im not into beating a bunch of balls anymore. I did that for my 40 years. Im done. So, I go home, I play with my kids, I play with my family. I own a golf course. I help run the golf course. I try to do the things I need to do there. Youll find me sometimes weeding, jumping on a mower and mowing. I hit balls usually maybe Saturday and Sunday the week before I go back out. Thats it. Thats my preparation. The only time I work on is when I get to the golf course.Bernhard Langer, the winner in 2010 at Carnoustie, had a 71.Defending champion Marco Dawson opened with as 72. He won last year at Sunningdale.Michael Bradley had a 74 in his senior debut. He won four times on the PGA Tour. ' ' '

Its been a busy week on the fantasy football waiver wire -- especially at running back -- as many notable players went down with injuries and owners scrambled for their replacements. Some fantasy players may feel quite undermanned heading into Week 3, but there are no bye week issues yet and hopefully good depth and/or a fruitful excursion to the free agent list has you ready for this weeks full slate of games.---BATTLE OF THE BACKUPSThe Panthers host the Vikings in a featured matchup of teams that are relying on reserve running backs to step forward for injured starters. Jerick McKinnon takes over for the shelved Adrian Peterson, with Matt Asiata also playing a role as a short-yardage vulture. The Panthers have allowed 106.5 rushing yards per game so far, so plug in the nifty McKinnon right away if you lost Peterson, and consider him as a flex play if you simply landed him off waivers. Asiata scored nine TDs when Peterson was suspended in 2014, but is better used when byes roll around. Cameron Artis-Payne and Fozzy Whittaker may share some work in place of Jonathan Stewart. The stingy Vikings defense is sixth against the run so far and Artis-Payne might only post mediocre totals, while Whittaker can give you some point-per-reception respectability because of his pass-catching abilities.---DOWNTRODDEN BROWNSCleveland has already lost their top two quarterbacks, and have to go with untested rookie Cody Kessler at Miami, which should be hungry to win after losing at Seattle and New England. Promising rookie Corey Coleman broke his hand in practice this week, and even suspended wideout Josh Gordon battled more off-field issues as Cleveland continues to spiral downward. Isaiah Crowell may have to face stacked fronts and Gary Barnidges appeal has fallen again. Meanwhile, Ryan Tannehill has a very appealing matchup and an emerging DeVante Parker is looking like a viable starter on the rise.---RISE OF THE ROOKIE STAREzekiel Elliott was a first-round pick in many leagues, but has yet to break out with 134 rushing yards in two games. He does have two rushing TDs, but only 5 receiving yards and there were public whispers about his conditioning and focus this week. Elliott would quiet doubters and please those who invested a high pick in him (including the Cowboys) with a strong performance against the Bears. Chicago has allowed 114.5 rushing yards per game and lost three key members of its defensive front to injuries this week. This is the game for Elliott and an underperforming Dallas offensive line to truly get on track.---STILL CHARGINGSan Diego lost Danny Woodhead this past week, Keenan Allen is already gone, and Antonio Gates is trying to work through a hamstring problem. Fortunately for San Diego, they draw what appears to be the AFCs worst defense as they travel to Indianapolis. The resurgent Melvin Gordon already has three rushing scores after not registering any in his rookie year and is a prime start this week with a larger role awaiting with Woodhead out. Gordon is a terrific daily fantasy play, as the Colts have allowed 125 rushing yards per game so far. Newly signed Dexter McCluster should be added as a free agent for point-per-reception depth if still available, and WRs Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams are good starts against a pass defense that has already surrendered nearly 600 passing yards.---SEATTLE SLUMPThe Seahawks offense has scored only one TD through its first two games. Russell Wilson has not been himself because of an ankle injury that has limited his mobility and sometimes affected his passing. A home date vs. the 49ers may appear to cure some ills, but divisional games are never easy. Keep Wilson reserved until he shows signs of improving. Christine Michael is looking better than Thomas Rawls at running back, but neither are ideal starters right now. Doug Baldwin and Tyler Lockett still have potential to be playmakers even if their game is lower scoring. Also add Jimmy Graham if he is still a free agent, as he is gradually starting to get closer to being a more frequent contributor.---TALE OF TWO TAMPASJameis Winston will try to put a terrible Week 2 behind him and regroup against the Rams. Charles Sims takes over for the injured Doug Martin and should get strong starting consideration because of his versatility and expanded role. Winston is too erratic to be trusted yet, but Mike Evans is already flourishing in a lot of leagues and slot receiver Adam Humphries is looking like an interesting add in leagues with 14 teams or more, or even very competitive 12-teamers. This could be the week when Rams RB Todd Gurley shows his 2015 form.---ERRATIC PACKThe Green Bay offense has continued to disappoint, as Aaron Rodgers has been the ninth-best QB in fantasy so far. The Lions have allowed 592 yards and six TDs to opposing passers, so there is hope for an upturn this week. Expect Jordy Nelson to score and Randall Cobb to display his better form again. Eddie Lacy should get a chance to finish off a scoring drive or two with a TD run. Matthew Stafford will keep pace and you can start Marvin Jones and Eric Ebron with confidence. The Packers defense has been very good against the run so far, but Theo Riddick should play an expanded role this week with Ameer Abdullah out.---MONDAY NIGHT FIREWORKSThe Monday night matchup between the Falcons and Saints looks like a shootout. This is a week to consider rolling out even secondary fantasy types on both teams, such as Mohamed Sanu and Michael Thomas at WR.---This column was provided to The Associated Press by the Fantasy Sports Network, http://FNTSY.com . Indian archer Pooja finished the ranking round at the 29th spot with a total of 513 points in the Recurve archery event of the Paralympics Games in Rio on Saturday. She will face Polands Milena Olszewska on Thursday in the round of 32.Pooja started the event with a total of 47 points from her first six arrows as she scored 9, 8,8, 8, 7 and 7.In the second set, the Indian improved her performance as she added another 50 points to her score after getting scores of 10, 9, 8, 8, 8 and 7 points. But the third series saw her slip down as she scored 43 points with arrows of 9, 8, 8, 7, 6 and 5. In the second series, he shot 101.9 points, that got his total up to 202.5 points at the completion of the first two series.Virtually out of the competition after a below-par performance in the first two series, Naresh could only manage 98.6 and 101.4 points from his third and fourth series respectively.
